MINUTES OF MEETING OF 21 FEBRUARY 2024
President Paulette welcomed members to this Business Meeting. She announced that she had just received an application for membership from our guest speaker Cougar Lutze, This will be circulated and, if approved, will lead to a lowering of the Club's average age.  Since this meeting, arrangements were made to induct Cougar into the Club on 28 February before his departure to Tanzania.

 

She also reported on her meeting with PP Alan Wilson who has offered his resignation because he is no longer able to make the journey from Bribie Island to attend Club meetings.

Jim A announced that the Club had unfortunately received some other resignations.  Peter McQuoid had moved to WA and Des Crane had relocated away from Maleny.  Sadly Angela Griffin has also retired after having achieved some notable successes both for and with the Club.  The Board will decide how to mark this event.

Sherryl G reported that a film fundraiser, generously hosted by the Maleny Film Society on 10 February with the proceeds of the ticket sales being donated to Speak Up Now, had been a great success. The film shown was Shavda which was confronting and certainly heightened the awareness of domestic violence.

Fran outlined the arrangements that have been made for the RYDA event at Corbould Park.

There was a discussion about organising the catering for the Historical Motorcycle Club's Swap Meet on Saturday 9 March.  Roly is arranging to supply food in the Cricket Pavilion on Friday evening, Saturday morning and lunch.  He will be calling for volunteers to assist with cleaning the pavilion and setting it up for the preparation and serving of meals.

Chris B conducted his regular extortion based on another set of questionable assertions.

 COUGAR LUTZ INDUCTION
P Paulette writes: It was a special ‘out of the box’ gathering on the evening of 28 February as we inducted Cougar Lutze into the Maleny Rotary Club. Most of you have met him and heard him speak either back at our November meeting or early in February when he spoke again.

 I think he must be the youngest member we’ve ever inducted although I’m happy to be corrected about that. Cougar is off to Tanzania next week, so this was the only opportunity we had to hold his induction, as he will not be back on our shores until about October.

It was also a perfect opportunity to have a photo with the youngest and oldest, as well as longest serving Rotary member in our club, John Whan.

 

Re upcoming guest speakers at our meetings, on March 6 we will have Helen and Hannah from Maleny State High School talking to us, I am trying to organise times for a variety of interesting local speakers, including well known artist Peter Hudson, local retail business owners and local musicians. Later in the year, we will definitely have the creators of the musical play, A Girl’s Guide to World War. This has gone from being a local Sunshine Coast production to being performed at The Powerhouse in Brisbane.  It is about to go on a regional tour in Queensland and probably nationally. Aleathea Monsour and Katy Ford live here in Maleny and it will be a pleasure to have them come to one our meetings.

If anyone has any ideas of someone they think would be an interesting guest speaker, please let me know and I will endeavour to arrange it.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
On Sunday 16 July at the Koala Fodder Plantation in Springsure Drive, Mapleton 500 eucalyptus seedlings were planted by volunteers - see pictures below. This project was sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Council after initial promotion by the Rotary Clubs of Nambour, Woombye and Maleny. 

The Council had prepared the site and then supplied the seedlings and protectors.  Volunteers completed the work in one hour - people power!

October is Mental Health Month. At our meeting of 4th October I have arranged for Kirsty and Chris from Bamboo Projects to talk about what they do. Bamboo Projects won the top sustainability business at the Sunshine Coast Council Australia Day Awards this year.  Bamboo Projects is a registered mental health and disability support charity, offering a variety of supports, including social and community participation. They engage with those at risk of marginalisation to participate in cleaning up the waterways. This provides connection to community and culture, as well as removing marine debris from our waterways.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 19TH JULY
President Paulette opened this Business Meeting with a new head table arrangement. Club feedback was that it may be desirable to move the long table to the other side of the room when we have guest speakers using the video/audio screen. This will spare several of members having to shift their chairs.
- Official Opening of Koala Fodder Plantation
President P reported that Greg W and she had attended the official opening of the plantation and tree planting event - see report above.
- Maleny Rangers Soccer Club Car Parking  29 July
President P reminded members that the club has agreed to provide assistance with car parking for the Maleny Rangers soccer match at the Showgrounds on 29 July.  Following members are confirmed to assist:  Roly N, Bruce K, Scott W, Lionel T, Laurelle O, Jim A and Chris B.
- Rotary Charity Golf Day Friday 8 September
Roly N advised that the organisation of the event is proceeding very well with sponsorships for the various holes plus holes in 1 /eagles. A few more raffle prizes would be helpful. The first participants have already paid their fees. Advertising has been placed in the Rotary Gist, local papers and electronic newsletters. Beneficiaries are Orange Sky and Shelterbox.
- Membership Dues
Treasurer Jim  reminded members that half yearly fees ($140.00) are now due. He has already received payments from 3 members.
- Club Calendar 
Lionel T reported that the Calendar is about to go to print. He was waiting on sponsorships for 2 spaces. But otherwise, well received by our community with 98 photos submitted for the calendar competition.
- Inaugural Xmas in July camping trip to Yarraman
About 20 members are attending.In the absence of Director Craig S, Lionel T and Greg W handed out the Rotary Xmas in July 2023 Road Trip Challenge to members making the trip – 8 Items and the Questionaire for perusal and completion – 45 questions. It is recommended to be aware of the questions and actions required well before departure. For members who are going to Yarraman but could not make our last meeting, give Craig S a call or pop into his office to collect the documents.
- Grants
We have received an application for funding from the Maleny Street Gardeners Alliance.
- Youth
Fran T confirmed that P Paulette, PPs Sherryl and Greg W plus herself would be acting as guides/assistants for the RYDA event on 20 July. Year 10s from MSHS and the Flexi School would be attending.
- Chaplaincy
Fran T will also be attending the MSHS Chaplaincy Breakfast on 3 August and will take the opportunity to hand over our Club donation of $500.
- Environment
Neil A introduced the members on his sub committee; he is planning a letter to every Rotary Club in our District seeking financial support of $10 per club per meeting throughout the year to assist with the cost of undertaking Platypus DNA sampling and research throughout Qld rivers. There was also discussion about the use of our Platypus logo and Platypus bags.
- International
Greg W advised that Craig S is looking for other members to join his committee with plans to promote events and educate our community regarding Lift the Lid for Mental Health, Shelterbox and Polio Eradication.
- Craig S is also planning a lunch with Allan Wilson at Sandstone Point.
- Rotary Bowelscan
Rotary District 9620 Bowelscan project has been extended this year to 31 August.

Fine Session
Our Sergeant Chris B had the bucket rattling with change for another very entertaining fine session.

Member Profile
We had the pleasure of hearing a very interesting and informative talk from one of our newest members, Bruce Kelly, and how a fortuitous visit to the local Watson family in Maleny led Bruce and his good wife Sissel to retire and live in Maleny. After initially working as a pilot in Canada, he made a career change to a people focussed position as a Corporate logistics manager. This lead to positions in senior management with large corporations throughout the world.
Thank you Bruce for your inspiring contribution to the evening.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
- Changeover and Induction of New Members
It was wonderful last night to see some of our Rotary members who we haven’t seen in a while for one or another reasons. Malcolm and Nancy Baker plus Andy and Mia Schouteten were there together with Jack Wilcox and past member Bob Hall. I think everyone enjoyed the food and it was certainly noisy in the room with lots of conversations happening.

We finally inducted Lenah Komarenko, who has been sick; she was so nervous and elated at the same time - welcome Lenah. At this week’s meeting, we’ll be inducting another new member Scott Wassman, who was introduced by Lionel.

- Muscle on the Mountain Parking Sunday July 2.
Chris Brooker is asking for people to put their hands up for parking the spectators’ cars this Sunday morning from 6am to 12pm. He needs a lot of people to volunteer as it’s going to be a big event, with proceeds going to Prostate Cancer and to supporting our local community. He’s even offering a ‘fine free’ meeting next Wednesday night for all volunteers!

- Koala Fodder Plantation, Mapleton
Planting day is coming up soon on Sunday July 16 with the planting of the 500 specifically chosen eucalyptus tube stock. The ground will be prepared and the holes dug already.  It starts at 9.00am with a formal opening by the Sunshine Coast Council and then the work begins. It’s happening at Spring Pastures Drive, Mapleton. There will be refreshments for the volunteers.

There will be people from various clubs and organizations to help out. Because of this, they are asking volunteers to register so they can keep track of the numbers. Nambour Rotary Club is responsible for running the event.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 7TH JUNE
President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming members and a guest, former Rotarian Scott Wassman, who has recently moved to Maleny. She congratulated Rick Vickers on receiving the Sunshine Coast Volunteer of the Year award that morning.  She also confirmed that the Change Over Dinner would be held at the Hotel on 28 June in our normal meeting room. The two course meal cost would be $38 a head with alternate drops.

Roly N thanked all the team of members, partners, Interactors and others who had assisted in the Food Stall and at the gate in what appears to have been a record breaking Show. There were huge sales of food with the supplies purchased for both days being sold on the Friday. He said that he hoped to receive similar support for the Club's Golf Day on 30 September.

Ric T reported that the offsite  parking arrangements for the Show raised $3,500 for the Mens Shed, Historical Society and the Car Club.

Sherryl said that the International Convention in Melbourne had been very well organised and she had been impressed, particularly with the use of the Theme "IMAGINE". The other attendees from the Club said how much they had enjoyed it.

After a financial assault from our Sergeant, our volunteer Guest Speaker was our own Rick Vickers, wearing one of his many hats. He is a nominee on the committee which is to report on the Sunshine Coast Council proposal to establish an ecological park in the hinterland on 65 hectares of land,  adjacent to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.  

The project provides an opportunity to expand our accessible green spaces by creating a unique destination for the whole community, inspired by the beautiful natural environment of the Sunshine Coast. An ecological park is a type of park that will support nature-based recreation, education, and research, whilst protecting, celebrating, and restoring the sites inherent environmental, natural, and cultural heritage values. The ecological park is a long term project aiming to restore natural ecosystems over many years and decades, allowing the community to be part of the restorative process. The vision for the ecological park is to create a place of cherished nature and ecological wonder for generations to discover and enjoy.

After a lively question and answer session, Keith  gave Rick a well deserved vote of thanks.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I would like to remind members about the District Conference which is going to be held at Brisbane Town Hall on March 24-26. It's the 100th year of Rotary in Queensland which is another good reason to come along.  One can make a weekend of it in the Brisbane CBD by travelling down and back by train, no driving. There are great speakers like Sir Peter Cosgrove and William McInnes (if you were at the Kingaroy conference, you'll remember what a fabulous raconteur William is). The organising committee is going all out to make this a conference to remember.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 1ST FEBRUARY
President Paulette welcomed all members and guests Bruce Kelly, Helen Owens and her Dad.  She began by congratulating John Whan for being a nominee for Senior Citizen of the Year. She mentioned the good turnout for the “Mobile Come and Try” Australia Day event, but acknowledged that there was a belief that perhaps a return to the Showground would be an improvement. The Shelter Box, professionally erected and dismantled at the Rotary Stand, will now be housed locally, rather than down in Brisbane.

The recent RYDA event was hosted by 4 local clubs and was a great success with the young drivers.

Bernice is to represent us by attending the High School swim meet this Friday (03 Feb). (is she nominated for the senior relay event?)

Ric T recommended the running of a casino night to raise funds. The provisional date is 13 May at the RSL. There will need to be a training session before hand for potential croupiers/ roulette operators etc.

Upcoming community events which will need all our members include the parking for the Barung Wood Expo (29, 30 Apr, 01 May) and the Maleny Show (2,3 June).  As this will be the Centenary   Anniversary, the Show Society will hold a launch event (23 February).  There is the possibility of a return of Muscle on the Mountain on a Sunday around late July or mid August. Plans to repeat last year’s successful Golf Charity Day are in an early stage with a target date in mid September.

Chris B fined most of us for various dubious crimes and some that defied fantasy land, earning some coin for the Club’s coffers.

Unfortunately our own guest speaker Renee H was away sick.  Fran T stepped into the breach and introduced Helen Owens from the High School to talk about her experience at the recent Youth Science Forum held in Brisbane. Helen told us of the many facets of the three day event, hosted by Brisbane universities. It provided year 10 to 11 students an exciting range of in-person and digital science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) experiences. While she found out much more about many of the science disciplines, her favourite still appears to be biology. She thanked Rotary for supporting her and we wished her well in her studies and her future.

Rick V gave the vote of thanks.

Our AG Tony Long then chatted to us about various Cluster aspects and his personal involvement with Humanitarian Projects International. He thanked us for our ongoing support of the parking roster at Australia Zoo and hoped we would register for the upcoming Rotary Conference, especially as it is celebrating 100 years in Queensland.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 3RD AUGUST
President Paulette opened this meeting by welcoming members.  She spoke about the Maleny Rotary Club Golf Day which has been rescheduled to 28 October and mentioned the advertisement for this in the latest edition of the D9620 Gist.  She also thanked Craig for arranging with Telstra to provide some golf balls and other gifts for the participants.

She mentioned other upcoming events:

 - 14 Aug Drag Queen Bingo being organised by member Jared A.  

- 24 Aug The R&USC Scholarship  Dinner meeting was discussed. The Club has the responsibility of running the bar once again. As Chris will not be available, other names were submitted and accepted.

- 31 Aug Pride of Workmanship Dinner at the RSL.  Paulette, Greg W and Alan W spoke about Pride of Workmanship and how Rotary is perceived as promoting a positive message to local businesses. They also highlighted the number of new businesses and the number of changes of ownership.  Jared A will be MC at the Awards Night. 

Lionel spoke about the public hanging of calendar photos which has previously taken place in Maple 3. Unfortunately this can no longer take place there due to renovations. Many and varied alternate suggestions were received from the floor.

Fran gave a glowing report on RYDA that she and Renee attended. Noted that Renee was absent this evening due to a dental procedure (and sore hands from striking Zac for him not responding appropriately to her distress).

Jim spoke on the Outridge’s send off. There were 80 to 90 attendees on a mongrel night at RSL. Kerry N and cohorts were to be complimented on the excellence of the "nibbles".  RSL bar staff, pricing and quality of product exemplary (possibly biased report? - Ed).

Jim A then mentioned that the majority of members had paid their dues with some doubling and, in one instance, trebling their payments.

Jim again . . the price of sausages at Sausage Sizzle now raised to $3.00, which is still cheaper than some other organisations.

The Sergeant's session was brilliant, as usual, although some prompting of appreciation was required for some of the more obscure fines.

In the absence of the Guest Speaker, Mike (Mr Smooth) Gregory spoke on his and Sherryl’s dramatic trip to the Top End with special reference to crocodiles, contracting Covid and a subsequent evacuation flight to the Darwin quarantine facility,  and being allowed to return to complete their itinerary.  Apart from the scenery, the highlights were meeting with indigenous locals and learning the history of area.  The advertised bonanza of catching boat loads of barramundi was not forthcoming but Sherryl managed to hook the only fish landed their trip,

Mike and Sherryl both thoroughly recommend the tour.

The meeting closed at 8.20p.m.

I seem to get an endless amount of emails about different events and causes which I generally pass on to Bernice to forward on to you all. I understand you’re probably too busy to look at all the emails we tend to receive these days. However, a few of these are really interesting or worthwhile so I thought I’d mention a few to you here. You may be interested in attending or donating to them.

The first one is August 2022 Dignity Drive in Maleny. The Dignity Drive is an initiative of charity group Share the Dignity. Share the Dignity believes access to period products is a right, not a privilege. 1 in 5 Australians have been unable to afford period products at some point in their life. All products donated need to be  in original packaging, including pads, tampons, maternity pads, period undies, menstrual cups and incontinence products are accepted. The campaign will be kicking off from 3 August and finish 30 August  2022. Maleny Woolworths and both Star Discount Chemists (Maple St and Riverside Centre) are the donation points. 

Next is the End Polio Now walk. The walk is on Sunday 14th August at La Balsa Park at Harbour Parade, Buddina  from 8am to 11am. It’s only a 2km walk and there’s some lovely scenery. Find details below to register.

Thirdly, ITHACA - CALOUNDRA CITY LIFE SAVING CLUB Patrols : Bulcock Beach, Caloundra are running our popular Grey Medallion course again and have places left for 27 & 28 August. This is a specially adapted 2-day course for seniors covering how to deal with an emergency, CPR, defibrillator, first aid, marine stings, water safety, water wise skills, dry rescue, familiarising grandkids with water etc. Cost $5. Lastly, we’ve been hearing quite a lot about the Regionalisation Pilot Project lately which we have to vote on in a couple of months. There was an email sent around with times and dates where you can listen and find out more about it. A couple of sessions have already been on and there’s another four to go. So, if you want to be well informed about this Regionalisation Pilot Project, then I suggest you catch one of the sessions left to join in - Sunday 31 July @ 3.00pm, Thursday 4 August @7.00pm, Tuesday 9 August @12.00pm and Friday 12 August @7.00am; hopefully a time there for all of us. I understand they will be recorded as well so you can listen later. MINUTES OF MEETING OF 6TH JULY
President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming those members who were present and in good health and wishing that those who were unwell had a speedy recovery.  This was a Business Meeting with no Guest Speaker.

Roly N delivered an update on the farewell which the Club was sponsoring for Rob and Sam Outridge  at the RSL on 21st July.  It was expected to be a wet, cool night which may affect numbers, but 130 people had booked.  The new owners will be attending.

Rick V will run the small programme of formalities that has been arranged. Chris will deliver the Ode before Rob and Sam will be presented with Paul Harris Fellowships for their service in the town.  They really have done amazing things and helped many people over the years. They will be missed.

Winton Johnson will present them with the keys to the town.

RYDA was due on  21st July with Fran and Renée attending. It has since been reported to have been a wonderful day.  It went off without a hitch and provided the students with life saving lessons - many thanks to our representatives. 

Arrangements are proceeding for the Pride of Workmanship Awards dinner to be held on 31 August at the Maleny RSL.

Regionalisation webinar - Register for the session convenient for you.

The Treasurer announced that the six monthly dues had not changed and he looked forward to receiving members' payments.

In the absence of the Sergeant, there was a dob in session - a pleasing aspect was that many members opted for self flagellation!

For many years storage facilities for the Club have been provided by a container in John and Bernice's garden. An alternative solution is needed - and long overdue. Rick and Lionel started the planning process for new storage facility and members contributed suggestions on a white board. 

Brian A announced that Probus had Mike Keane as a guest speaker at the CWA Hall on 27 July about the disappearance of flight MH17.  Mike was a former  RAF fighter bomber pilot, a commercial airline executive and member of our Club. Members would be welcome.

              You've really made us quite a town

              Our IGA is envied, famed

              I bring with me a cavalcade

              An avenue of accolades

              How can we bear to say goodbye

              We've really got it made.

 

              You've helped to put us on the map

              Folk travel far and wide

              They've heard about the Gourmet Fare

              And prowl the aisles inside.

 

              For Noosa ham so succulent

              Asparagus in brine

              For Maggie Beer's Duck Pate

              These three I find sublime.

                        (and I buy them all the time

                         they've even got Beef Jerky

                         which makes us all feel … perky?)

 

              There's brands to make you chortle

              From near and far they're sourced

              Like “Drunken Sailor – Ugly Duck”

              And Pomodoro's sauce (of course).

 

              But while I've eulogised these treats

              I should have mentioned first,

              Community Chest and your bequests

              The Groups that you have nursed.

 

              The Food Hampers for those in need

              The Schools, the Clubs galore

              A million – nearly two I've heard

              You've given them and more.

 

 

              The time ten years ago or so

              When we all were minus power

              You gave us ice and help and hope

              It was your finest hour.

 

              And then there are your wondrous Staff

              I cannot name them all

              But Janelle – no longer with us

              I clearly can recall.

 

              There's Fiona who can put a name

              To everybody's face

              And tiny, cheerful Trisha Lyon

              Who serves with style and grace.

 

              The boy who says “Now can you cope

              Would you like a hand with that?”

              I love it when he escorts me

              ‘Cause your trolleys are a trap.
