PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Whilst all our thoughts and efforts are focussed on the Maleny Show at the end of the month, there are other activities following on after the Show.

Tree Planting - Glasshouse Country Rotary Club

Tony Long rang to tell me about a tree planting that’s taking place on Tuesday 6th June at Endeavor Bark Drive, Glasshouse Mountains, The area is in behind the Glasshouse Sports Club. Specific trees have been selected and a plan drawn up as where each tree goes. The Council is preparing the holes so it’s just a case of placing the trees in their designated spot. He’s asked if our Club would like to get involved on the day. Then, we could share the kudos from planting 100 trees to mark the 100th anniversary of Rotary in Queensland with a plaque erected on site.
Tony is only looking for about 3 people to join in this tree planting. Contact me please if you want to get involved on the day, so I can let him know.

 Koala Fodder Plantation - Mapleton
It’s with great pleasure that I can announce that the Sunshine Coast Council finally signed off on the MOU for the Koala Fodder Plantation in Springsure Drive, Mapleton to go ahead. This means that 500 various eucalyptus seedlings will be planted shortly.  Nambour, Woombye/ Palmwoods and Maleny Rotary Clubs met with councillor David Law in his office approximately a year ago. So, it’s fabulous to see this is finally going to commence. The council are contributing some money towards the preparation of the land I understand, as their delay caused the Koala Carer Rachel Aspinall to miss out on a small grant that had to be used by end of last year.
Once established the branches from the trees will be harvested and used by trained carers who assist orphaned Koalas. These young koalas are cared for outside of Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital until they are a certain weight and healthy. Their mothers died because of car strikes, dog attacks or infections such as chlamydia. When they recover, the koalas are returned to the wild where they were found.
Jan Lawton from the Rotary Club of Woombye Palmwoods has invited Rachel, the volunteer Australian wildlife carer, to be a guest speaker at a meeting to get local interest for planting. It’s to be held on Tuesday 6 June at 6.30pm at the Woombye School of Arts Lower Hall.
Shortly, we will be asking for some members from our Club to help with the planting of the 500 specifically chosen eucalyptus seedlings. Once again, the ground will be prepared and the holes dug. There will be garden stakes and protection to be installed. 

Australia Zoo Parking
Australia Zoo parking is coming up on the 24thJune to 19thJuly and Glasshouse Country Club would appreciate our Club’s assistance once again. The roster will be available as soon as possible.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 17TH MAY
President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming members and guest speaker Tim Bagshaw.  

Fran T gave a report on the Interact District Conference, Nathaniel’s presentation there, and the DG’s visit to our Interact Club.  

Sherryl G launched the new Speak Up Now booklet, Safe and Savvy Seniors, and had copies available for any members who wanted one.  This received much interest from members with orders for supplies to be placed in businesses and community.  

Roly N reported on preparations for the Show where the new freezer is working well. He also mentioned that the Golf Day promotion would start next month.  

Jim A needed more volunteers for the Show Gate roster and gave an update on the new Gate procedure. He also reported that the Club had received a generous donation from Jack Wilcox following the sale of his book at the last meeting.

P Paulette updated members on Greg W's medical episode requiring a night in Maleny Hospital. She reported on the Casino Night which was a great success despite low numbers - thanks to the hard work of Ric T and Jacinta.  She also mentioned the Xmas in July event at Yarraman and there are still a few cabins available – see Craig S if interested.  The R&USCCF meeting at the University had lower numbers than previous years but had a superb guest speaker on mental health (with tips to avoid its problems) and the scholarship recipients were duly grateful. She also noted that we will be required for parking duties at Muscle on the Mountain in July.  Finally, meetings in August, October, and November have been changed from the third Wednesday to the fourth Wednesday.

After Acting Sergeant Roly had led a lively fines session, Phillip S introduced our guest Tim Bagshaw who wanted to talk about his latest initiative – a Local Pain Collective to address the fact that persistent pain is not as well treated as acute pain, and we need to have more community discussion to develop a better understanding and therefore better management.  He is forming a multi-disciplinary team and hopes to hold a community Q & A. Later in the year Tim is planning a Pain Revolution Rural Outreach Tour to take the message to more distant communities. This is scheduled to include a gruelling cycle ride in north Queensland. He is seeking funds to pay for the hire of venues and concluded by saying that Sociology is as important as Biology.

As I get older I’ve come to realise the following 10 things:

1. I talk to myself because I sometimes need expert advice.
2. Sometimes I roll my eyes out loud.
3. I don’t need anger management. I need people to use a bit of common sense and stop being so silly.
4. My people skills are just fine. It’s my tolerance for stupidity that might need some work.
5. The biggest lie I tell myself is “I don’t need to write that down, I’ll remember it!”
6. When I was a child I thought nap time was punishment. Now, it’s like a mini-vacation.
7. The day the world runs out of wine is just too terrible to think about.
8. Even duct tape can’t fix silly, but it can muffle the sound.
9. Wouldn’t it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for 10 minutes; come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller?
10. ‘Getting lucky’ means walking into a room and remembering why I am there.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Our DG Tim Keeler has postponed his official visit to our Club on 10th May but will be joining our members attending the R&USCCF Scholarship Dinner that evening.  His visit to the Club is being rescheduled.

Wood Expo Parking April 29/30 and May. Another reminder to those who haven’t put their name down to do shifts at some point during this long weekend, please help if you can.

 MINUTES OF MEETING OF 19TH APRIL
President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming members, Guest Speaker Anna Carrick and three visiting Rotarians from Bribie Island, Caboolture and Randwick respectively. Also present were the parents of Interactor Nathaniel Audley of MSHS who has expressed an interest in Youth Exchange. Bernie Wilson from RC of Bribie Island is the Distrist Youth Exchange Programme Director. She explained how the programme worked and the criteria used for selecting a host country. Although she has worked full time in her family business, Bernie has hosted 11 overseas students and explained the benefits and the happiness that she had enjoyed as a result of her experience. She then answered questions. 

The running of the meeting was a little disjointed due to problems in the kitchen - the problems were of delivery rather than quality. Our Sergeant managed deftly to reverse this vibe.

Our Guest Speaker was Anna Carrick of Food Agribusiness Network.  FAN is a not-for-profit food industry cluster that was established in 2015. It now has more than 370 members from across the food value chain located in Gympie, Noosa, Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay and beyond and is recognised nationally and internationally as a leading Australian food cluster.

Anna is the co-ordinator for the Sunshine Coast cluster and now lives in Peachester.  She is a country girl, originally from Orange, NSW. With media and cultural studies completed from CSU in Bathurst, Anna headed to Sydney to start an eclectic mix of roles, in a variety of industries, across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Hospitality, skincare & cosmetics, events, model agent, advertising, interior design, even environmental science. Anna is also a marriage celebrant.

With FAN, she is involved with helping the existing members in her cluster expand their business and in finding new producers.  Her major clients in the town are Maleny Diaries, Maleny Coop and Maleny Cheese.

Keith R gave the Vote of Thanks and the meeting closed at 8:50pm.

WIT VERSUS ANGER

When Gandhi was a young student, studying law at University College, London, a Caucasian professor, called Peters, disliked him intensely and always displayed prejudice and animosity towards him.  Also, because Gandhi never lowered his head when addressing him, as he expected, there were always arguments and confrontations.

One day, Professor Peters was having lunch at the dining room of the University, and Gandhi came along with his tray and sat next to him. The professor said, "Mr. Gandhi, you do not understand. A pig and a bird do not sit together to eat."

Gandhi looked at him as a parent would a rude child and calmly replied, "Do not worry professor. I'll fly away" and he moved to another table. Professor Peters, reddened with rage, decided to take revenge on the next test paper, but Gandhi responded brilliantly to all questions.

Professor Peters, unhappy and frustrated, asked him the following question. "Mr. Gandhi, if you were walking down the street and found a package, and within was a bag of wisdom and another bag full of money, which one would you take?"

Without hesitating, Gandhi responded, "The one with the money, of course."

Mr. Peters, smiling sarcastically, said, "I, in your place, would have taken wisdom, don't you think?"

Gandhi shrugged indifferently and responded, "Each one takes what he doesn't have."

Professor Peters, by this time, was beside himself with rage and so great was his anger that he wrote on Gandhi's exam sheet the word  "idiot" and gave it to Gandhi.

Gandhi took the exam sheet and sat down at his desk trying very hard to remain calm while he contemplated his next move.

A few minutes later, Gandhi got up, went to the professor and said to him in a dignified but sarcastically polite tone, "Professor Peters, you signed the sheet, but you did not give me the grade."

Wit always wins over anger.

 PRESIDENT'S NOTES
I hope that all members and their families enjoyed a great May Day long weekend. Our meeting next Wednesday is a General  Meeting with no need to wear masks or to log in with your Qld App at the Maleny Hotel. We can all look forward to some good hearted Rotary fellowship and a presentation from Scott Willis, Principal of Conondale State School.

Our Rotary Calendar will be very busy over the next few weeks and right through May 2022. 

- Anzac Day  On behalf of our RC of Maleny, I presented 4 vouchers of $50 each to our local schools – Maleny SHS, Maleny SS, the River School, and Conondale SS at the main Maleny ceremony. 

- 10 May Maleny Candlelight Ceremony, Tesch Park at 5pm. Our Speak Up Now collaboration will be hosting this domestic and family violence and elder abuse event and all members and partners are encouraged to attend to listen to some great speakers.

- 11 May Combined Meeting Rotary and University of the Sunshine Coast Community Fund (RUSCCF). Our Club will be attending the RUSCCF Scholarship Presentations at the University of the Sunshine Coast from 6 pm to 9 pm. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with Rotarians from all over the Sunshine Coast and learn about the world leading research being undertaken by PhD students at the University of the Sunshine Coast. My money is also on Alan W picking up another raffle prize.

- 25 May RYDA Training Day at Corbould Park Caloundra for Rotarians considering participating in one or more of the upcoming driver training days for our local Maleny State High School year 10s and other local schools during July. This project is one of our best and most impactful youth projects. 

- 27 & 28 May Maleny Agricultural Show with Rotary Food Stall and gate duties. Roly N and Jim A are circulating their rosters looking for Rotarian and partner volunteers. We need as many Club members and their partners to participate as possible in one of our main fund raising activities for the year. Roly N is confident that our magnificent steak burgers will be the talk of the Sunshine Coast again this year.

- Rotary Bowelscan Qld will also be manning a stand in the Education Building beneath the Main Pavilion during the Show – much like that at the recent 9620 District Conference at Caloundra - so keep an eye out for it at the Show and for some local publicity about the program through social media, Facebook, GC&MN, SVG and MDSRC News.

- 3 June  – respectful relationships and kite making workshop at the River Schoolby Speak Up Now. Sherryl G, Greg W and Val France will be involved along with teaching staff of the River School.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 20TH APRIL
President Greg opened the meeting with a ‘Welcome to Country’, with Ric T giving the Loyal Toast, and Neil A the Rotary Grace.  Greg then welcomed our Guest speaker for the evening, Jill Lillingstone, and her husband Kelvin. Jared introduced our special guest Sam Hughes, the ‘Travelling Jackeroo’.  We also welcomed Judy Frederiksen, and the partners Gillian Allen, Nancy Baker and Kelly Crane. David Arnot, President of RC of Katoomba, was also an apology due to COVID but a banner from his Club was presented to Greg W. 

Greg then thanked all the Rotarians who helped out with the parking at Australia Zoo over the holidays.

Ric T introduced our surprise Guest, Sam, who thought that Jared was taking him out to dinner, so needless to say it came as a complete surprise when he found himself at the Rotary meeting. Sam was invited to give us a run down on his adventures thus far. 

Sam left Maleny a year and a bit ago.  He eventually arrived in Darwin and has been there for about 6 months, waiting on parts and carrying out repairs on the tractor and the trailer.  He was a little behind schedule, but according to Sam this was because the Rotary calendars slowed him down.  He returned to Maleny when his Dad got sick with COVID, to help out on the farm for a couple of weeks over the Easter break.  He was amazed at how much Maleny had changed in that time.  The new garage did not escape his attention.  Sam did acknowledge that Maleny is a wonderful town to come back to.  So far in his travels he has covered approximately 7,000kms in his beloved tractor, reaching a top speed of 39kph.  Patience is a necessity. His tractor is now fully repaired with a new turbo, and the trailer is almost ready to go again.  Things move slowly in the NT.  Apart from the Northern Territory, the initials NT also mean ‘not today, not tomorrow, and next truck’.  The question was asked……How’s the dog?  Apparently the dog has steak every night for dinner, and in fact when people enquire after Sam, it is usually in the order of – how’s the dog, the bird, the tractor, and how are you?  So far Sam has raised just over $100,000 for his 3 charities.  The Flying Doctors is his primary charity and he has raised over $50,000 for them.  Dolly’s Dream is another of Sam’s passions and he has raised over $40,000 for this very worthy cause.  Sam has a lot of gear……there is the tractor, which has a boat on the roof and a gyrocopter.  The tractor tows the trailer which has a small car and a motor bike, and a plane on the roof.  He goes out to stations and properties in the outback and in remote areas.  Once there he sets up his movie centre at the local Pub, and spends his time sitting down and talking with the farmers about issues of suicide and depression.  This is all about ‘Mental Health Awareness’.  Some chats are short, and some can last for anything up to 5 hours.  Sam is there to listen.  He also goes to schools and talks to the students about bullying, hence Dolly’s Dream.  The southern states and the Politicians still lie ahead for Sam.  At the end of Sam’s talk, our Guest speaker Jill, paid tribute to him.

This was followed by dinner and a very robust fine session.

MALENY SHOW:  Roly updated us on the Show rosters and the need for soup making.

ANZAC DAY:   Chris B advised that all the services would go ahead as normal.  The Dawn service at 4.28, followed by Witta Cemetery, then the Hospital, and lastly the main Service.  Our Maleny hospital is one of the two War Memorial Hospitals, the other being St. Andrew’s in Brisbane.

JOINT MEETING – USC:  This will be held at the Innovation Centre on the 11th May.  Four Scholarships will be awarded.  All recipients are female.  One of the Scholarships is in commemoration of the 100 year Rotary Centenary.  Maleny will be running the bar.  We have 8 members attending  -  Malcolm B, Chris B, Renee H, Paulette S, Greg W, Alan W, Rick V, and Jeff C.

DV WEEK:  Sherryl advised that the Candlelight Ceremony will take place at 5.00p.m. on 10th May in Tesch Park, and following this, food will be served at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Chris B introduced our Guest speaker, Jill Lillingstone, who took us on a fascinating journey through history. Jilll’s grandparents, William and Jessie Lillingstone from London, selected land in North Maleny Road on the 30th June 1887. Her father, Bill, was born in 1900 in Maleny, leaving in 1928 to join the New Guinea Police.  In 1940, as an engineering draftsman on WW2 gun mountings, the Navy sent him to Melbourne. There he would meet the lady who was to become Jill’s mother.  Jill was born in 1943.  

The Lillingstones arrived in Maleny on 3rd October 1886, and in February 1907 William and Jessie took their younger children to Canada.  They returned in 1912.  Dr. Penny Edwards, who lives opposite the Lillingstone land, provided Jill with details and showed her the land that William and Jessie selected in 1887.  The exact spot of their home is still visible, matching her Dad’s old photos.  William Lillingstone was Oxford educated in teaching, book-keeping and articled.  He did the books for several Maleny businesses, was secretary of the Obi Obi Sawmill, and Schoolmaster for over 20 years.  

The first school in the Blackall Range is recorded as ‘Blackall Range State School’ in 1886, later becoming ‘Wootha State School’ which closed in 1914.  There is conflicting information about early schools, as they changed their name, or amalgamated, and also of course the outbreak of World War I in 1914 severely changed the scene.   In 1887 William Lillingstone selected land, and on part of this he built the Maleny Provisional school, which appears to have become the Witta State School in 1895.

Jill has been associated with Rotary from early childhood.  Her Mum’s Uncles were Tasmanian Rotarians from the late 1920’s.  Jill volunteered with Rotary at the Royal Melbourne Show, and continued assisting Rotary for many years.  Jill introduced her daughter to Rotaract in Melbourne.  She was also a leader for Rotary’s Youth Leadership Awards and worked tirelessly to establish the Monash Rotaract Club.  She was inducted as Charter President in 2010, resigning in 2011 to move to Queensland. She won ‘Near North Coast Showgirl’ 2013 representing Maleny, and in 2014 she won ‘Near North Coast’ Rural Ambassador.  Through country shows at this time Jill met Ivan Hankinson.  Their grandparents had adjoining selections in the 1880’s.  Jill has done an enormous amount of research and has gleaned information from far and wide.  It was very insightful and in-depth, and wonderful to hear the diary entries, where people told it how it was.

I hope that all members and their families are enjoying a happy and safe Easter. Our meeting next Wednesday is a Business Meeting. For the first time in a very long time there is no need to wear masks or to log in with your Qld App at the Maleny Hotel. We can all look forward to some good hearted Rotary fellowship and a presentation by local historian Jill Lillingstone about the early Maleny selectors. It’s a Partners night, but also keep a lookout for and give a warm RC of Maleny welcome to visiting RC of Katoomba President David Arnott and his partner Ruth Achurch. Also our own young Maleny adventurer and fundraiser extraordinaire Sam Hughes, the Travelling Jackaroo, who is on a lightning visit back to Maleny.

 Our Rotary Calendar will be very busy over the next few weeks and right through May 2022. 

1. Our Australia Zoo Parking team are finishing their duties this morning. I want to pass on my sincere thanks for their volunteer work over the Easter School holidays. Australia Zoo has been very busy over the past few days and several of us have needed to rest our feet after busy sessions at the Zoo. 

2. Anzac Day 25 April. On behalf of our RC of Maleny, I will be presenting 4 vouchers of $50 each to our local schools – Maleny SHS, Maleny SS, the River School and Conondale SS at the main Maleny ceremony. I encourage as many members as possible to participate in and/or attend one or more of our local marches and ceremonial services.

4. 11 May. Combined Meeting Rotary and University of the Sunshine Coast Community Fund (RUSCCF). Our Club will be attending the RUSCCF Scholarship Presentations at the University of the Sunshine Coast from 6 pm to 9 pm. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with Rotarians from all over the Sunshine Coast and learn about the world leading research being undertaken by PHD students that University. My money is also on Alan W picking up another raffle prize.

5. 25 May. RYDA Training Day at Corbould Park Caloundra. For Rotarians considering participating in one or more of the upcoming driver training days for our local Maleny SHS year 10s and other local schools during July 2022. This project is one of our best and most impactful youth projects. 

6. 27 and  28May. Maleny Agricultural Show – RC Maleny Rotary Food Stall and gate duties /parking. Roly N and Chris B will have their rosters ready for Rotarian and partner volunteers. We need as many Club members and their partners as possible to participate in one of our main fund raising activities for the year. Roly N is confident that our magnificent steak burgers will be the talk of the Sunshine Coast again this year.

7. Rotary BowelScan Qld will also be manning a stand in the Education Building beneath the Main Pavilion during the Maleny Agricultural Show– much like that at the recent 9620 District Conference at Caloundra - so keep an eye out for it at the Show and for some local publicity about the program through social media, facebook, GC&MN, SVG and MDSRC News.

8. 3 June. River School are holding a respectful relationships and kite making workshop run by Speak Up Now. Sherryl G, Greg W and Val France will be involved along with teaching staff of the River School.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 6TH APRIL
President Greg opened the meeting with the usual formalities with Mike G giving the Loyal Toast and Renee the Rotary Grace.
Greg briefed us on the District Conference and thanked those members who attended.
Roly asked for volunteers to assist with parking at the Maleny Golf Club on 13th April 0700 – 0830.
Paulette briefed us on the 2022 Combined Rotary & University of Sunshine Coast meeting on 11th May; Chris B will organise the bar and nominated a team of ‘so called volunteers’.
Roly confirmed that the 2022 Maleny Show is ON and the Club will be running the usual Food Stall all day Friday and Saturday 27th & 28th May. Many volunteers will be required.
Jim confirmed that, as tradition demands, Maleny Rotary will man the main entry gate for the show on 27th from 0600 to late evening. Again many volunteers required.
Sherryl briefed us on activity with the Domestic Violence group and the availability of promotional cards.
Fran covered recent Maleny High School Interact activities.
Following the meal Sergeant Chris then entertained members with ridiculous fines. All were received with the usual good humour.

Keith, as the Duty Officer, introduced the guest speaker with a brief introductory bio. Dr Adrian McCallum is a Senior Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering at USC with great ‘hands on’ experience in remote area science and engineering.

Adrian explained that he had an early age ambition to be a polar explorer and at the Brisbane Expo 88 he met Tim MacCartney-Snape, the first Australian to summit on Mt Everest. Inspired, Adrian then wrote to Sir Ranulph Fiennes and asked how he could achieve his ambition. Refer http://www.ranulphfiennes.co.uk/
Adrian has the rare distinction of having served in the Australian Air Force, Army and Navy. He became a Navy meteorologist and climbed Mt Everest as part of a Navy team in 2001.  Three Australians died on Mt Everest at that time and this led to Adrian’s interest and expertise in oceanography and in particular  the behaviour of ice/snow in order to predict avalanches.
Adrian presented some fascinating photos and short videos of life on Antarctica and within the Artic Circle.
A wonderful 30+minute presentation to a rapt audience.

A BAGPIPER'S LAMENT?

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the bush. As I was not familiar with that area, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.

I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car.

Though my head was hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen anything like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

Our next meeting at the Maleny Hotel on 2 February is a Project/Business Meeting. Come and celebrate the coming together of two great Districts and get to know your fellow Rotarians and new found friends in a relaxed atmosphere. Rotary Driver Education at Corbould Park Caloundra for 2022:
This program will now be held in July 2022 at a date to be advised.

Foundation/International:
At our last meeting, the Board approved a donation to ShelterBox of $1000. An article relating to Shelter Box and the Rotary International Tonga Volcanic Eruption and Tsanami appeal will also be placed in local newspapers. The effects of the Volcano and Tsunami on January 15th will be far-reaching, impacting the Tonga Community for months, possibly years to come. Communication remains problematic with international and inter-island calls still not possible due to the damage to the undersea cable. Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) will be working with Rotary New Zealand World Community Service (RNZWCS) and Rotary Club of Nuku’alofa (Tonga) in providing aid and assistance to the affected communities and restoring their livelihoods. RAWCS has registered a Rotary Australia Relief Fund project to seek financial assistance from Rotary Clubs, the public and private sector. Donations to the RAWCS Relief Fund are tax deductible. 23 February 2022 marks the 117th anniversary of the world’s first Rotary meeting. On that date in 1905, four individuals, each of a different background and different vocation met for dinner in the spirit of friendship and fellowship. In respect to the original four members, it is possible that Margaret Mead’s famous quote applies more to them than anyone: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has”.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 2ND FEBRUARY
The meeting got off to an early start at 18:55 with an opening discussion on last meeting's strudel!  The President welcomed members and the Guest Speaker Amanda Kennedy from Sunshine Coast Libraries. The Treasurer advised there had been a good response to his call for subscriptions to be paid.  Most members had settled their accounts with just a few stragglers.  

The Secretary reminded people:
1. The next sausage sizzle is on 19 February. James McC expressed mild concern regarding the timing of the early shift. A couple of members volunteered to be reserves for the day.
2. The District Conference is at Caloundra from 18 to 20 March.  All members are encouraged to attend.  This will be the first conference for the newly defined District.  The Club will be setting up a display in the House of Friendship at the conference.
3. The Maleny Show is on which was well received.  Jim in particular is looking forward to gate duties with the challenge of inspecting the vaccination status of all attendees.
4. The Wood Expo organisers have also indicated the expo will be on this year. The Treasurer was pleased as this is a significant contributor to our coffers. Unfortunately the event has since been cancelled.
5. A reminder that Zoo parking shifts will be available during the next school holidays – get your name down fast to avoid missing out!

The President called for expressions of interest in assisting with the Mooloolaba Triathlon. Members agreed there was insufficient capacity to assist this worthwhile event this year.

The post dinner fines session was conducted with its usual good humour with a material number of members apparently having warranted the receipt of a fine!

The Duty Officer introduced Amanda Kennedy of Sunshine Coast Libraries.  Amanda spoke passionately about the library and introduced several services offered which were likely unknown to the Rotary audience.  Such services as adult literacy classes, use of a podcast studio with training, heritage library at Nambour, assistance with ancestry tracing, equipment to digitise photographs, technology 1 on 1 sessions (this was thought most useful for a number of our members), online movies and magazines, home library service  and school holiday activities for the kids.  The list goes on and on.  The library service is truly amazing.  Amanda was pleased to see that most members present were members of the library and encouraged the non-members to sign up.  Peter McQ gave a vote of thanks.

The Old Fridge
Some guy bought a new fridge for his house.  To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying:
'Free to good home. You want it, you take it.'
For three days the fridge sat there without anyone looking twice.
He eventually decided that people were too mistrustful of this deal.  So he changed the sign to read:
'Fridge for sale $50.'

The next day someone stole it!

The Psychiatrist
A noted psychiatrist was a guest speaker at an academic function where Mr X ** happened to appear. Mr X took the opportunity to schmooze the good doctor a bit and asked him a question with which he was most at ease.
'Would you mind telling me, Doctor,' he asked, 'how you detect a mental deficiency in somebody who appears completely normal?'
'Nothing is easier,' he replied. 'You ask a simple question which anyone should answer with no trouble. If the person hesitates, that puts you on the track..'
'What sort of question?' asked Mr X.
Well, you might ask , 'Captain Cook made three trips around the world and died during one of them. Which one?'
Mr X thought a moment, and then said with a nervous laugh, 'You wouldn't happen to have another example would you? I must confess I don't know much about history.'

District 9620 Conference in Caloundra 18, 19 and 20 March 2022:
The Inaugural District 9620 Conference will be held in beautiful Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast at the Caloundra Events Centre from 18th to 20th March 2022. I hope that as many of our members as possible are able to join with me to celebrate the coming together of two great Districts and get to know your fellow Rotarians and new found friends in a relaxed atmosphere. It will certainly be an opportunity to see and hear some amazing speakers changing the lives of others. Please put the dates in your diary. You can attend for one, two or all the days and also the Saturday night dinner.
We are continuing to explore the prospect of a static type display in the House of Friendship with an emphasis on our Speak Up Now Project. If members have any other ideas, please approach any of the Board.
 
Other Covid 19 Impacts:
I can confirm that due to the impacts of the Omnicron variant of COVID 19, the Board has also decided not to participate in the DIK service activities on 5th February or in the ROMAC Trivia Night on 3rd March.

Maleny SES Awards Presention:
Prior to Christmas, it was also my honour and privilege to attend this ceremony to present our Rotary Club of Maleny Community Spirit Award to SES Volunteer Pamela O’Connor. Pamela was absolutely thrilled to receive our award in recognition of her commitment to our broader Maleny and hinterland community through her dedicated long service with the Maleny SES.

 

And for some international news:
The Rotary International President Elect for 2022-23, Jennifer E. Jones, a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, will be the first woman to hold the office of President in the organization’s 115-year history and recently announced her incoming theme. According to the Rotary International website, Jennifer Jones imagines Rotary fulfilling big dreams. “Imagine, a world that deserves our best, where we get up each day knowing that we can make a difference.”

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 19TH JANUARY
It was a smaller than usual gathering with only two tables of members attending. There was the noisy table with all the boys on it and there was the other table with the girls and our El Presidente Greg. A social gathering more than a business dinner meeting that’s for certain! Although there was a little business discussed, of course. More about that later…….

The biggest benefit of attending the meeting was that we were offered dessert! Apple strudel with icecream and cream. When Kim asked who wanted dessert, it was a unanimous raising of hands. Someone suggested taking a photo of said dessert so we could include it in the blog, however it was too late. By the time it was suggested, there was nothing left to photograph as all the desserts were devoured.

So back to the meeting. Bill H was applauded for being on the front page of this week’s edition of the GCM News and the subsequent photos inside relating to his gaining lifetime membership with the Maleny Show Society. Bill had a tale to tell of course about the photo of him at 8 years old wearing a suit. He apparently went swimming in it with his mates as he didn’t have anything else to wear.

Bernice was once more looking for someone to fill in at a sausage sizzle. This time for Murray who can’t make the one in February and Paulette put her hand up to do it.

Jim A mentioned that the half-yearly Rotary fees are due and that he’d sent out an email to all the members with some paying as soon as they received it.

Greg W spoke about the Australia Zoo parking thanking those who had done some shifts over the Christmas & New Year holidays and how the amount will help to increase our coffers. He mentioned being ready to do the next lot of parking due over the Easter holidays which won’t be until April.

It was also mentioned that with the Maleny Wood Expo planned for the long weekend in May and the Maleny Show at the end of May, there would be a great opportunity to raise significant funds for the Club. On the calendar is also the return of Muscle on the Mountain in July although all money from parking that day goes to charity.

Greg also gave another big thanks to Jim A and Roly N for putting up the lighting display at the Uniting Church over Christmas and for Roly’s masterpiece of a sign saying ‘Joy with Rotary’. Roly was apparently very prompt in taking down the lighting display afterward. Malcolm B said that the external lighting displays were well received by the community and the organizations who participated were happy to do it. So, it’s looking like it will be done for 2022 Christmas as well. Roly is hoping for a short word like ‘Joy’ again as it’ll mean not having to change the sign too much. Malcolm replied he thinks it may be ‘Peace’ which wasn’t quite the answer Roly had hoped for.

President Greg then closed the meeting.

All the members of the company's Board of Directors were called into the Chairman's office, one after another, until only Ted, the junior member, was left sitting outside.
 

Finally, it was his turn to be summoned.

Ted entered the office to find the Chairman and the other six Directors seated at the far end of the boardroom table.

 

Ted was instructed to stand at the other end of the table, which he did.

The Chairman looked Ted squarely in the eye, and with a stern voice, he asked: "Have you ever had sex with my secretary, Miss Floyd?"

"Oh, no sir, positively not...!" Ted replied.

"Are you absolutely sure...?" asked the chairman.

"Honest, I've never been close enough to even touch her...!"

"You'd swear to that...?"

"Yes, I swear I've never had sex with Miss Floyd, anytime, anywhere.." insisted Ted.

(a) Health Updates
Judy RS has thanked all of our Rotarians who have visited Chris RS at Erowal. All members are encouraged by Judy to visit Chris at any time convenient to them. We can look forward to catching up with Judy at Changeover. 
Rick V reports that Cilla is on the pathway to recovery from her heart procedure. 
(b) Our next meeting at The Maleny Hotel on 16 June under Qld COVID-19 Regulations is a project meeting. Nathaniel Audley, a Year 10 student from the Maleny State High School Interact group, will be visiting to report on his attendance at the recent RYPEN Youth Camp at Coolum in May. We shall also have a Nepal update from CL.
(c) Recent Club events and Community Service 
• Easter Parking at Australia Zoo. Jim A has reported that we have received a heathy contribution to Club coffers from our Rotary neighbours Glasshouse RC for our service work. A huge thank you to all of our members who helped out with parking at Australia Zoo. As I have reported previously, car parking at Australia Zoo has proved a solid source of revenue when so many of our usual other car parking and fundraising activities have been cancelled throughout our current Rotary year due to COVID 19. 
• Maleny Agricultural Show. The crowds were up, the fireworks were fantastic, and there should be no doubt that we have had our best show ever. I have also been corrected. It was only a mere but amazing 45 seconds from time of order to delivery of the Maleny Showstopper Steakburger. Another massive thank you for the tireless efforts put in by so many Rotarians, Friends of Rotary and prospective Rotarians at the Front gate on the Friday, at our Rotary Food stall on both days, and for all the planning, preparations, ordering, set up and take down, and cleaning before and after the Show. We also had Rotarian Ric T involved with the Park N Ride at the off-site locations at Maleny Pioneer Village and the Hopper's land.  And another huge thank you to Rick V for his very successful and no doubt laborious time-consuming deliberations, meetings, and unsung planning work with the Maleny Show Society sorting out their myriad of COVID 19 compliance requirements.  
• Dark Sky Night with Sunshine Coast Astronomy at Maleny Golf Club on 2 June. Paulette S, Peter McQ and James McC all helped with parking duties at a very clear but cold viewing of our Southern Skies.
• World Environment Day on 6 June at Honorary Member Jill Morris’ Book Farm at Reesville. Paulette S, Sherryl G, James McC and Mary and myself all helped out initially with parking vehicles, but also joined with several other local Environmental groups including Hinterland Bush Links and interested people from all over the Sunshine Coast, many of whom had been involved in previous events at Book Farm and or previous tree plants going back over 30 years, of which I am one from about 1990. Jill can be congratulated for her vision and dedication in preserving some outstanding unlogged rainforest at the headwaters of the Obi Creek, and now extending this patch of rainforest with her continuing tree plantings. I was amazed at the sheer height of two of the strangler figs, and the amount and quality of the water flowing in the headwaters over the basalt rocks of the creek. 

• Jack Wilcox Book Launch of "Maleny Weather 1880 - 2016" on 12 June. Jim A and Sherryl G were both invited by Jack to speak at the book launch at the Maleny RSL. I was lucky to catch up with Jack on the Friday before the launch, and he informs me that he will have signed copies available for sale at our upcoming Changeover, and they will also be available for ongoing sale through Rosetta’s Bookshop Maleny.
(d) Other News 
• Sponsorship of Kenedi Lucas Mollel
The Board has continued to share the sponsorship of Kenedi Lucas Mollel, and we will be receiving an update on Kenedi’s progress at University shortly.
• Our local young Wootha adventurer Sam Hughes, the Travelling Jackeroo, continues his travels and fundraising in outback Qld 
• Rick V reports that the Peace Poles have arrived, and he and Malcolm B will work with the Principal of the River School to install them over the coming months. Bench seats are also being installed by the school around them with an official opening and publicity in all local papers to coincide with World Peace Day on 21 September. 
• Rick V is also assisting MACG with their COVID plan (spinners and weavers) for their part in Knitfest. Lions have asked for COVID Plan assistance for their Welcome to Maleny event, and such assistance is also required for our upcoming Kite Festival. 
• Sherryl G reports that Speak Up Now has been the successful recipient of a major SCC Grant to fund hairdressers and beauticians training modules and promotional banners and will be installing the new DFV&EA signage in the newly opened toilets at the Maleny Showgrounds.
• We can all look forward to the upcoming induction of Neil Andison aka the Platypus Whisperer. His mentor will be Ric T.
(e) Upcoming Events
• 16 June Project meeting at Maleny Hotel
• 19 June Rotary Calendar 2022. Photos to be judged at the RSL commencing at 8.15 am. The Calendar Committee is very pleased that two newer members Des C and Peter McQ have joined the Committee. 
• 23 June Maleny Rotary Changeover at the Orangery. Invitations have been sent out, and with a limit of 60 places, members are encouraged to book fast as Changeover Acceptances are flooding in. Club Directors should organise the delivery of their reports to Bernice McC by 15 June.   
• 27 June Shelter Box Display at Maple Street Maleny. Jeff C has put a lot of effort into organising the delivery to Maleny of a brand new Shelter Box. The Board encourages members to attend to share and experience the opening of a brand new shelter box and to thereafter erect the tent and display its other essential contents. We will need up to 6 members to erect the Box and we will be seeking donations from the public towards Shelter Box. A range of publicity materials will also be available for display. 
• 26 June to 11 July Car parking at Australia Zoo – 8 am to 12 Noon. Could members please open the roster recently forwarded by Bernice McC on behalf of Ian Hope from Glasshouse Rotary. The sooner that we can finalise and return the roster of our members able to help out on the roster, the better for the organisers as the end of the month is fast approaching. This is a fundraising exercise as well as great publicity for Rotary in conjunction with an iconic Sunshine Coast Tourist Attraction.
• 30 Jun Vocational Visit to The Maleny Chocolate Factory at 16.30h behind Monicas Café and pizza afterwards at Jenn’s Pizza located at Finbars Bicentenary Lane. Paulette S will be looking for numbers at our upcoming Project meeting. Nothing better for our mental health than to enjoy some dark chocolate with a good red wine and fine company.
• 17 July Winter Blues Concert – The Board has decided not to proceed with the event as our event grant application was not fully funded by Sunshine Coast Council and is insufficient to warrant the risks nor goes anywhere near the total expenses associated with the delivery of the event. The funds will be returned to Council. 
• 1 August Kenny Cluster Joint meeting with new 9620 DG Wendy at Australia Zoo from 8 am to 10 am.
• 28 August Pride of Workmanship Dinner. 
The first Facebook POW event notifications have been published, and Paulette S and Greg W will commence a walk around Maleny businesses to promote participation in the event. If you would like to join us, please contact either Paulette S or Greg W for arrangements 
• 18 September Kite Flying Event – at Beersheba Living Museum, Ziza Field and Maleny Settlers Green. Greg W is organising a visit by event organising committee members with the Balmoral Rotary Club to discuss the arrangements and format of an event that they have previously held at the Murrarie Sports Park in Brisbane. We will be working with our Speak Up Now partners, Blackall Range Zonta Club, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and Maleny District Sport And Recreation Club to plan and deliver this new creative arts and recreation event involving local children and their parents with a theme of Domestic and Family Violence and Elder Abuse Prevention.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 2ND JUNE
President Greg welcomed members and Kate Huth, our Guest Speaker.  at our local schools who are  Before the meal CL gave a slide presentation to remind members of the scheme to assist children in our local schools who would be prevented from participating in some school events because of financial constraints.  This scheme has been set up by our Club and other service Clubs with full cooperation from Head Teachers. Any grants are given under strict privacy conditions.

Our previous Exchange Student Kate Huth was our Guest speaker.  At a young age, Kate began her community service work with Apex Australia; Kate also spent a year in Denmark as a Rotary Exchange Student before returning to Australia to study Applied Linguistics. After years of involvement, Kate joined Apex Australia and served on the State Board as the Youth Officer. Kate then spent three years in Indonesia teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). After Indonesia she went to Italy for a year before returning to Australia to gain her BA Ed as an Indonesian teacher.

Kate furthered her involvement with Apex Australia, serving on local, state and national boards for seven years. During her four-year term as an International Relations Officer, she travelled widely throughout the Asian countries with Apex organisations, arranging inter-country exchange trips to increase opportunities for the community-based organisations to assist each other. Kate was the first woman National President of Apex and after serving many years on the Apex National Board, she became Apex Global Chair. During her term she spearheaded the formation of Women’s Apex Clubs.

Kate was more recently granted a Rotary Peace Fellowship Scholarship and went to the USA to undertake a Degree in “Global Studies”. She is currently doing a PhD based on the updating of a program known as “Teacher in a Box” where she believes she will be able to help create lasting change in education and communities throughout the world.
