Jeff Cornfoot introduced Ashman Shetty to talk to us about Rotary in India. Jeff met Ashman on his motor bike ride across India. Ashman is the secretary of the Mangalore Hill-Side Rotary Club, Karnataka on the south west coast of India. The club has about 45 members and has been chartered for 21 years. A major project for the club is to administer the Rakthadan Blood Bank. The Club also puts together e-learning kits for schools; tree planting projects; area clean-ups; and school support programs.
Ashman is the head of a school in the village of 2500 people. The school provides for students from kindergarten to University degrees in arts and commerce, with hostels for boys and girls. The school has been running for 17 years with 823 students. It costs $1000/year for education and board for a student.
Ashman has the vision of a student interchange program with Australia.
After a short Sergeant’s Session, Andy Schouteten introduced our second guest, Kris Fitzgerald who has recently formed Studio 23, a centre for empowering people with diverse abilities to socialise, work, create and learn. It provides programs for people with disabilities and disadvantaged community members to engage with their community, and develop creative and practical skills. Kris, a retired teacher from Maleny High School, was accompanied by Lynda Walker - a facilitator, and Kris’ son Luke - a member of the centre.
Studio 23 is located on the deck at the Maleny Community Centre, and started in September 2018. There are about 12-13 members utilising the centre at present who are encouraged to create their own programs to suit their interests. Programs include social and community engagement with the local community, music, cooking and health living. The centre is funded by member fees and the selling of members' endeavours, particularly pot plants at their Market Days held at the Kiosk at the Community Centre. Funding is tight and every assistance is appreciated.
Roly Nieper gave the vote of thanks.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
A MODERN TAKE ON SEX EDUCATION
The mother of a 17-year-old girl was concerned that her daughter was having sex.
Worried the girl might become pregnant and adversely impact the family's status, she consulted the family doctor.
The doctor told her that teenagers today were very wilful and any attempt to stop the girl would probably result in rebellion. He then told her to arrange for her daughter to be put on birth control and, until then, talk to her and give her a box of condoms.
Later that evening, as her daughter was preparing for a date, the mother told her about the situation and handed her a box of condoms.
The girl burst out laughing and reached over to hug her mother, saying,
'Oh mum! You don't have to worry about that! I'm dating Susan!'
