MINUTES OF MEETING OF 17TH JUNE
Our fifth Zoom meeting commenced at 1700h and, after overcoming some technical problems, President Sherryl welcomed 23 members and guest Judith Ross-Smith, Immediate Past President of the Zonta Club of Blackall Range.  Unfortunately one member was unable to resolve her problems.  The meeting commenced with President Sherryl reporting the death of Past RI President Sir Clem Renouf who was a long time mentor to PDG Michael, wrote the forward to our Club history, and attended our 50th Birthday celebrations to launch the book.  As a tribute to Clem we then viewed the Polio Eradication video from the 7.30 Report some years ago.

President Sherryl then introduced IPP Judith of the Zonta Club who updated us on the progress with the combined services club’s Domestic Violence initiative.  She thanked us for successfully getting a District Grant and contributing Club funds towards the project and, in answer to a question on Council approval for the erection of signs, mentioned that they had no problem with Brisbane Council who installed all the Zonta signs for them.  However, locally they have not as yet been able to get the signs into public toilets so would be contacting our Councillor to seek his assistance.  The incoming President of Lions is keen to join Rotary, Zonta, and Quota in this combined community project.

Paulette updated us on the proposed Winter Blues Concert scheduled for 18 July at the Showgrounds.  A submission has been made to Council.  It is proposed that there will be up to 200 cars in the oval with big screen and radio/phone audio links and room for 100/140 in the hall.  Food will be pre-ordered, supplied by the Hotel, and delivered to cars and tables.  There will be a bar.  Four well known bands including the High School Youth Band are booked to perform but the sound system is still a work in progress.  Many helpers will be needed on the day to set up, park cars in designated spaces, man the bar, meet and greet, and clean up afterwards.

PEGreg and PP Alan have been walking the streets canvassing businesses about our Pride of Workmanship Awards scheduled for 29 August at Tranquil Park.  Advertisements have also been placed in all local papers.  Greg outlined plans for our Changeover which will be a relaxed affair at the Sport and Rec Clubhouse 1200 for 1230 on Sunday 28 June.  It will be BYO food and drink but gourmet sausages will be available and there will be music.  Maximum attendance will be limited to 40 – 20 inside and 20 outside.

Roly then treated us to his memorable moments – mud bathing in the Dead Sea and Opera in Cathedral Gorge deep in the Bungle Bungles NT – a highlight of the Kimberly trip he recently went on.  It does have amazing acoustics and many tourists are moved to sing there.

In general business Lionel informed us that all advertising slots for the 2021 calendar have been filled with many advertisers electing to continue to pay full price.  Rick reported that the enclosure at the back of the  Food Stall at the Showgrounds has been completed thanks to Malcolm and his four helpers.  Bernice reminded us that the annual meeting at the USC would now be by Zoom on 24 June.  PE Greg advised that he had attended the District Zoom meeting the previous Friday, the Budget had been approved, and meetings would in future be monthly.  Paulette brought up the subject of the Interact Aprons but this needs to be discussed further.

President Sherryl then thanked all attendees, especially the presenters, hoped those members with computer glitches would get them sorted out, and closed the meeting.

Interesting facts about Railroad Tracks & space shuttles

The U.S. Standard railroad gauge  (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches.
That's an exceedingly odd number.

Why was that gauge used?
Because that's the way they built them in England, and English expatriates designed the U.S. Railroads.
Why did the English build them like that?
Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used.
Why did 'they' use that gauge then?
Because the people who built the tram ways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing.
Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing?
Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts.
So, who built those old rutted roads?
Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (including England) for their legions. Those roads have been used ever since.
And the ruts in the roads?

Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels.
Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing.
Therefore, the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot.
In other words, bureaucracies live forever.
So the next time you are handed a specification, procedure, or process, and wonder, 'What horse's ass came up with this?', you may be exactly right.
Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses.

Now, the twist to the story:
When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, you will notice that there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank.
These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs.  The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah.

The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit larger, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site.
The railroad line from the factory  happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel.
The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds.

So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's ass.

And you thought being a horse's ass wasn't important!

MEETING OF 14TH APRIL
Pres Jeff welcomed all and introduced guest speaker Bryan Mason from ROMAC. Special guest also present was DGE Alan Stevenson.  Pres Jeff read some recent changes by RI to membership, e-clubs, meeting flexibility – all good news.

Chris B spoke about the upcoming events, especially the Wood Expo and the potential to raise lots of funds by all contributing to the roster.  Jeff and Chris also spoke of the special meeting for 27th April at Tranquil Park. (See item below). Partial names were gathered for the combination Youth Night / Community Grants Awards Night.

DGE Alan spoke briefly on Polio – our top priority and with only 10 cases so far in the world (2 Afghanistan/8 in Pakistan) we are on path to ridding the planet of polio. Also mentioned that Rotoract members can now be members of Rotary clubs.

Meal over Chris B fined us all AND passed around the blind raffle. Won by me and it was not rigged. Many thanks for those who contributed to my good fortune.  Chris B extracted thoughtful penalties from all. Jim A cross fine on the dangers of Meals on Wheels delivery and John W spent two minutes trying to explain his way out of a cross fine. Not many were convinced.

Lionel introduced guest speaker Bryan Mason who spoke knowledgably on ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children), its beginnings in 1988 in the Asia Pacific region.  Then 10 years ago it evolved to increase its effort to support more children needing life saving surgery. He showed us a 4 minute video about a lad from Vanuatu with deformed feet and the good news story following his rehabilitation.

ROMAC expanded to Qld in 1998 and this year marks its 400th patient. This year alone has seen 43 patients treated and it also marks the 100th patient from Timor Leste. In closing he mentioned that bed space is now the greatest challenge in bring more kids to ROMAC. He appreciated the $1000 donation from our club and is looking to developing a global grant to get more local training and local knowledge to the countries from which the children are selected.

Rick V thanked him for his thoughtful and informative speech and, by way of thanks, presented him with our History of Maleny through Rotary and our world famous (already seen in Tokyo and Miami) shopping bag.

Pres Jeff concluded with thanks our guest and guest speaker, reminding all about the sausage sizzle on 14 May and wished a safe journey home.

PRESENTATION OF ROTARY GRANTS
At an enjoyable and well run evening at Tranquil Park on 27th April, President Jeff presided and handed over grants cheques totalling $8,340 to 14 local groups - see Board minutes for details of the recipients.  There was an emphasis before the awards on the Club's involvement with youth matters with excellent speeches from a TS Centaur cadet and a member of Interact.

Chris B was as ever an entertaining MC. Hopefully there will be some photographs in this week's Glasshouse Country and Maleny News.

MEETING OF 6TH APRIL
Meeting of a select number opened by President Jeff and a couple of reports by Directors present.

National Youth Science Forum student Jane Miller gave a scintillating performance on her time at Canberra in January. She had prepared a power point presentation on the program and spoke to it eloquently, passionately and knowledgeably.

Jane certainly raised the bar on reports by any student who has attended a Rotary youth program. She had been invited to a further science symposium at University of Queensland that so impressed her she changed her major from Artificial Intelligence to Quantum Physics.

Jane is presently in Japan for a 9 month exchange and will complete her Yr. 12 next year. Definitely not the same girl we first interviewed approx. 12 months ago.

Following a very brief flurry of fines by Sergeant Chris, all true of course, we were given a presentation on Membership and New Members by AG Bruce McNaught.

Bruce spoke with vigour on themes of strategy, selling Rotary, Membership nights and the “elevator statement” whereby he challenged us to prepare a short presentation on Rotary to inform an unenlightened fellow traveller in an elevator (Americanised version of “lift”) during the time it takes to travel during stops.

And then we all went home . . . . . .

PRESENTATION TO THE MALENY MEN'S SHED
The Maleny Rotary Club presented a cheque of $10,500.00 to the Men’s Shed at the Maleny Historical Village for their  new slab. It was presented by Past Rotary President and President of the Maleny Historical Society, Ric Townsend and Rotarian John McLennan to Wayne Schultz, President of the Men’s Shed. Ric and Wayne are on the right of the photo.  Malcolm Baker was also present.
With thanks to the Maleny Locals Helping Locals Facebook page.

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE IN A COUNTRY WITHOUT MEDICARE

An old geezer became very bored in retirement and decided to open a medical clinic.  He put a sign up outside that said: "Dr. Geezer's Clinic.  Get your treatment for $500 - if not cured, get back $1,000."

Doctor "Young," who was positive that this old geezer didn't know beans about medicine, thought this would be a great opportunity to get $1,000.  So he went to Dr.Geezer's clinic.

Dr. Young: "Dr.Geezer, I have lost all taste in my mouth.  Can you please help me?"

Dr. Geezer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in Dr. Young's mouth."

Dr. Young: Aaagh!! -- "This is Gasoline!"

Dr. Geezer: "Congratulations! You've got your taste back.  That will be $500."

Dr. Young gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days figuring to recover his money.

Dr. Young:  "I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything."

Dr. Geezer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth."

Dr. Young:  "Oh, no you don't,  -- that is Gasoline!"

Dr. Geezer: "Congratulations!  You've got your memory back. That will be $500."

Dr. Young (after having lost $1000) leaves angrily and comes back after several more days.

Dr.Young: "My eyesight has become weak --- I can hardly see anything!!!!"

Dr. Geezer: "Well, I don't have any medicine for that so, "Here's your $1000 back." (giving him a $10 bill)

Dr. Young: "But this is only $10!"

Dr. Geezer:  "Congratulations! You got your vision back! That will be $500.

Moral of story - Just because you're "Young" doesn't mean that you can outsmart an "old Geezer".

Remember: Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to tick us off!

MEETING OF 17TH FEBRUARY
President Jeff welcomed everyone, particularly the President and 6 members of Glasshouse Rotary who had made the trip up the hill for our meeting and Andy, our “visiting Rotarian” from the Holland America Cruise Line, who presented a Rotary banner from a Club in California.

The Club was updated with information about the approval of community grants (not yet public); the closing off of sales of the successful 2016 calendar; the annual fund raising Melbourne Cup event for 2016 to be held at Maleny Manor; MDSRC’s annual dinner in April and calls for nominations for best community group and best volunteer; RYPEN nominations.

Volunteers were sought for the BBQ lunch for the Senior Citizens joint meeting with Kanango on 14 March and also the BBQ for Bat Night at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

Rick Vickers sought new members for the Calendar Committee, which would soon be planning the 2017 calendar.

Ric Townsend reported that the Rotary shopping bags had arrived and would be distributed to IGA and the newsagent next week.

Angela Griffin presented a PowerPoint supplied by RI about the value of Rotary’s only charity – The Rotary Foundation (TRF), which funded many varied and worthwhile humanitarian projects and programs around the world.  Only 2% of the donations received by TRF went on administration (exceptionally low compared with other charities) and members were encouraged to help meet the RI goal of “Every Rotarian Every Year” by personally making a US$100 tax-deductible donation to TRF. This can easily be done online through www.Rotary.org.

Ian Hope of Glasshouse raised $100 for TRF by organising an innovative $2 raffle for tickets to win a ticket in the Rotary Foundation Art Union raffle with top prize of a Toyota car. Keith Rogers, both Club Presidents, John Whan and Jim Atkinson won Art Union tickets.

Keith Rogers kindly stepped into the breach as speaker after our guest speaker withdrew at short notice. Always interesting to hear, Keith was able to share with us the intricacies of brewing, which can be traced back to 3000BC – humans have always been a boozy lot it seems! Keith focussed especially on the production of Guinness and the key materials that make up beer - malted barley (barley soaked in water), hops, yeast and water. The notable dark colour of Guinness is achieved by roasting some barley and the creamy white top of Draught Guinness is formed by the dissolved nitrogen coming out of solution.

Keith could have gone on and talked about the history of Guinness and his experiences of producing beer in Africa but that had to wait for another time.

Having thanked the Glasshouse members for joining us, President Jeff reminded Maleny members of the next meeting – a Project Meeting at the Masonic Lodge next week – 5.30 for 6pm. Apologies as always in advance please to Bernice.

A FURTHER REPORT ON THE DIFFICULTIES FACED BY TEACHERS

LITTLE JOHNNY'S BREAKFAST

A grade three teacher is giving a  lesson on nutrition, and she decides to ask her students what they had for breakfast. To add a spelling  component, she asks the students to also spell their  answers.

Susan puts up her hand and says she had an egg,  'E-G-G'.

'Very good', says the teacher.

Peter says  he had toast 'T-O-A-S-T'.

'Excellent.'

Johnny has his hand up and the teacher reluctantly calls on him.

'I  had bugger all', he says, ' B-U-G-G-E-R-A-L-L'.

The  teacher is mortified and scolds Johnny for his rude answer.

Later when the lesson turns to  geography, she asks the students some rudimentary questions.

Susan correctly identifies the capital of Canada . Peter is able to tell her which ocean is off Canada's east coast.

When it's Johnny's turn, the teacher remembers his rude answer from the nutrition lesson, and decides to give him a very difficult question.

Johnny, she asks, 'Where is the  Pakistani border?'

Johnny ponders the question and  finally says, 'The Pakistani boarder is in bed with my mother.

That's why I got bugger all for breakfast'.

- The AGM was held but there are vacancies for President and President Elect for 2016/17.
- A PHF will be awarded to Pat Stacey in recognition of his 27 years running the BOM Maleny site.Because of his health, the presentation will be made at his home by Angela together with his neighbour Judy Fredericksen.

- MCU is setting up a Community Engagement Committee and have asked the Club for a nominee.
- Calendar sales are proceeding; a table has been hired at the next RSL market.
- Christmas Cruise details were finalised.

Jim A asked for volunteers for the Street Carnival on 11 December.

Rick V spoke about the beginning of the Rotary Foundation in 1917 with funds of $5,000.  He gave details of the current grants scheme, the work undertaken to alleviate poverty, the setting up of Peace and Conflict Resolution Scholarships and the Vocational Training Team programme.

The Sergeant performed his act of questionable larceny with his usual aplomb.

Our Guest Speaker Ian Hope has been a Rotarian for 33 years and is a Past President of both Mackay and Glasshouse Clubs.  On retirement he moved from the north to Landsborough  and became involved, as a volunteer, in a micro-finance project in the town.  The Landsborough Area No Interest Loan Scheme (LaNILS) has limited capital with which to provide loans which are available to purchase household items, or services, to improve the quality of life or enhance social and economic participation. With a maximum loan of $1,200 available, this will provide assistance when affordable credit is not available.

Examples of LaNILS loans are white goods, household furniture, health items and other approved goods and services. Potential borrowers must hold a current Health Care Card, receive a Centrelink payment or have a low income as well as living in the LaNILS area.  They must have lived in their residence for about a year and have the willingness and capacity to repay.  As each successful loan applicant repays their loan, the money becomes available for another member of the community to access a loan.

In ten years, LaNILS has made 200 loans and the default rate is less than 4%.

A vote of thanks was proposed by Keith Rogers.

AN APOC

Andy an 80-year-old Scotsman went to the doctor for a check-up.

The doctor was amazed at what good shape he was in and asked: 'How do you stay in such great physical condition?'

'I am Scottish and I am a golfer,' said Andy: 'and that is why I am in such good shape. I am up well before daylight and out golfing up and down the fairways. I have a wee glass of whisky, and that's it.'

'Well,' said the doctor, 'I am sure that helps, but there has to be more to it. How old was your Dad when he died?'

'Who said my Dad died?'

The doctor was amazed.
'You mean you are 84 years old and your Dad is still alive. How old is he?'

He is 105 years old,' said old Andy. 'In fact he golfed wi' me this mornin', and then we went to the topless beach for a walk and had anither wee dram and that is why he is still alive. He is a Scot and he is a golfer, too.'

'Well,' the doctor said, 'that is great, but I am sure there is more to it than that. How about your Dad's Dad? How old was he when he died?'
'Who said my Granddad is dead?'

Stunned, the doctor asked, 'You mean you are 84 years old and your grandfather is still living! Incredible, how old is he?'

'He is 127 years old,' said the old Scottish golfer.

The doctor was getting frustrated at this point: 'So, I guess he went golfing with you this morning too?'

'No. Granddad couldnae go this mornin' because he is getting married today'.

At this point the doctor was close to losing it. 'Getting married!!  Why would a 127 year-old bloke want to get married?'

'Who said he wanted to?'
