AN APOC

Andy an 80-year-old Scotsman went to the doctor for a check-up.

The doctor was amazed at what good shape he was in and asked: 'How do you stay in such great physical condition?'

'I am Scottish and I am a golfer,' said Andy: 'and that is why I am in such good shape. I am up well before daylight and out golfing up and down the fairways. I have a wee glass of whisky, and that's it.'

'Well,' said the doctor, 'I am sure that helps, but there has to be more to it. How old was your Dad when he died?'

'Who said my Dad died?'

The doctor was amazed.
'You mean you are 84 years old and your Dad is still alive. How old is he?'

He is 105 years old,' said old Andy. 'In fact he golfed wi' me this mornin', and then we went to the topless beach for a walk and had anither wee dram and that is why he is still alive. He is a Scot and he is a golfer, too.'

'Well,' the doctor said, 'that is great, but I am sure there is more to it than that. How about your Dad's Dad? How old was he when he died?'
'Who said my Granddad is dead?'

Stunned, the doctor asked, 'You mean you are 84 years old and your grandfather is still living! Incredible, how old is he?'

'He is 127 years old,' said the old Scottish golfer.

The doctor was getting frustrated at this point: 'So, I guess he went golfing with you this morning too?'

'No. Granddad couldnae go this mornin' because he is getting married today'.

At this point the doctor was close to losing it. 'Getting married!!  Why would a 127 year-old bloke want to get married?'

'Who said he wanted to?'

MEETING OF 4TH NOVEMBER
President Jeff reported:
- the Melbourne Cup Lunch at Tiffany’s was a great success with an estimated profit of $6,000+ which would be divided equally between Humming Bird House and Shed The Light Nepal.
- ‘Rudolf’ would be present at the street party with a painted snow scene as a background for children’s photos.
-  ideas for the Xmas Party were called for and a reminder that the District AGM is to be held in conjunction with the TRF Seminar on Sunday.

Rick V informed members that the time capsule contents are currently on display in the library – more input from members is requested – it is planned to seal it up next week.

Bernice entertained with a rundown of the fashion parade at the Cup Lunch which was held in the chapel 20 metres from the changing area (windows modestly covered) necessitating a lot of running through the grass (not so easy in high heels) to get through the three costume changes in the time allowed.  The view (of the mountains I suppose) was magnificent, it was a fabulous day and hopefully can become an annual event for the Club.

Jim A gave a rundown of the Calcutta results together with a detailed explanation of how it all worked for the ignorant scribe.

Our guest speaker, Jim Straker of Zero Waste, was introduced by Sherryl as a lifelong ‘garbo’ and near neighbour from Reesville who is going to explain all the ins and outs of recycling.

Jim started by outlining the incredible amount of food that is wasted throughout the world – some 30% or 19 cubic metres per person per year and the disproportionate cost of such food from $500 per week per family in the US to $1 in Chad.  In Australia it is estimated that $5 billion worth of food is wasted every year.  Most of this ends up in landfill producing dangerous gases so the essence of his presentation was on ways to reduce this – recycle, compost, worm farms, ‘bokashi’ (google bokashi for full details), mulch, and most importantly make sure what you do throw away goes in the right bin.
The three bins (waste, recyclable, green) were demonstrated and the waste hierarchy explained – avoidance, reduce, reuse, recycle, recovery, and, as a last resort, disposal.  He then informed us that not all recyclables can be recycled – for instance plastic bags, styrofoam, and coffee cups cannot be recycled.

The collection trucks are equipped with cameras so that drivers can monitor the contents for inappropriate items and they are taken to the Resource Recovery Centre at Nambour, staffed mostly by volunteers, and Jim explained how the items are separated and dealt with.  Tours can be arranged for those interested.  Special collection points are provided for items such as mattresses, tyres, batteries, white goods, and computer waste.  Jim ended his presentation with information on how a landfill works and how they are now installing gas recovery systems to burn the methane and CO2 although hopefully the methane will be recovered in the future for use.  Informative pamphlets were distributed to members for further information.

There were many questions regarding what could and could not be put in the recycle bin and Jim was thanked by Michael and presented with the Club’s 2016 calendar and a copy of Humanity in Motion.

MEETING OF 21ST OCTOBER
President Jeff opened the meeting by welcoming Fran Tickle together with 3 visitors from Nepal, a visiting Rotarian Tony ? and guest speaker Bob Malcolm from Maleny Credit Union.

President's Update.
- Melbourne Cup Fund raising event 100% sold out.
- 23rd October is World Polio Day. Rotary Maleny will be donating a $2000 cheque. This will be matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation at $2 for each dollar contributed.
- Hinterland Cluster Group fund raiser being planned.
- Input required from Members for our upcoming Xmas Party.
- Need volunteers for the role of Sergeant.

Rick V reported that the Mary Cairncross Discovery Centre has received federal tourism funding of $1 million.  The total estimated cost of the project is $4.5 million.  He also gave an update on the Time Capsule project.

Fran Tickle reported that the Interact Club had raised $14,000. They wished to thank Rotary for their support.

Rotarian Ramkrishna from Nepal said that this was his second visit to Maleny Rotary Club. He advised that 15,000 people died in the earthquake in Nepal and thousands more lost their homes. He thanked Rotary for their continued support.  He then presented his Club's banner to the  President.

Guest Speaker Bob Malcolm from Maleny Credit Union advised that Financial Services was a changing world. He said that online banking functions offered a challenge for the credit union. New technology was very costly.  He also believed that the Murray Inquiry will put pressure on interest rates.

Since the failed merger with CUA some 4 years ago, MCU has a sense of ownership by its members. They continue to engage with the community through the various communities forums.  He believed that it was important to identify the needs of the community. This was being done through a financial literacy programme. He advised that he had spent time with the teachers at Maleny High School and there is a 22 unit course in Financial Services that they want to expand across the Sunshine Coast.

Bob also reported that the Chamber of Commerce had nominated MCU for a Community Award to mark the fund that had been set up ten years ago which now financed two grants per year for community service projects.

NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
LAST MONTH SAW THE 210TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR.
OUR CORRESPONDENT HAS UPDATED THOSE EVENTS TO CURRENT TIMES

If Nelson was at Trafalgar in 2015

Nelson: "Order the signal, Hardy."

Hardy: "Aye, aye sir."

Nelson: "Hold on, this isn't what I dictated to Flags. What's the meaning of this?"

Hardy: “Sorry, sir?"

Nelson (reading aloud): " England expects every person to do his or her duty, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious persuasion or disability.' - What gobbledygook is this for God's sake?"

Hardy: "Admiralty policy, I'm afraid, sir. We're an equal opportunities employer now. We had the devil's own job getting "England" past the censors, lest we offend our new ‘boat’ people.”

Nelson: "Gadzooks, Hardy. Hand me my pipe and tobacco."

Hardy: "Sorry sir. All naval vessels have now been designated smoke-free working environments..."

Nelson: "In that case, break open the rum ration. Let us splice the main brace to steel the men before battle."

Hardy: “The rum ration has been abolished, Admiral. It's part of the Government's policy on binge drinking: the Government is frightened of losing the ‘wowsers’ vote."

Nelson: "Good heavens, Hardy. I suppose we'd better get on with it … full speed ahead."

Hardy: "I think you'll find that there's a 4 knot speed limit in this stretch of water."

Nelson: "Damn it man! We are on the eve of the greatest sea battle in history. We must advance with all dispatch. Report from the crow's nest, please."

Hardy: "That won't be possible, sir."

Nelson: "What?"

Hardy: "Health and Safety have closed the crow's nest, sir. No harness, and they said that rope ladders don’t meet regulations. They won't let anyone up there until proper scaffolding can be erected."

Nelson: "Then get me the ship's carpenter without delay, Hardy."

Hardy: "He's busy knocking up a wheelchair access to the foredeck Admiral."

Nelson: "Wheelchair access? I've never heard anything so absurd."

Hardy: "Health and safety again, sir. We have to provide a barrier-free environment for the differently abled."

Nelson: "Differently abled? I've only one arm and one eye and I refuse even to hear mention of the word. I didn't rise to the rank of admiral by playing the disability card..."

Hardy: "Actually, sir, you did. The Royal Navy is underrepresented in the areas of visual impairment and limb deficiency."

Nelson: "Whatever next? Give me full sail. The salt spray beckons."

Hardy: "A couple of problems there too, sir. Health and safety won't let the crew up the rigging without hard hats. And they don't want anyone breathing in too much salt - haven't you seen the adverts?"

Nelson: "I've never heard such infamy. Break out the cannon and tell the men to stand by to engage the enemy."

Hardy: "The men are a bit worried about shooting at anyone, Admiral."

Nelson: "What? This is mutiny!"

Hardy: "It's not that, sir. It's just that they're afraid of being charged with murder if they actually kill anyone. There are a couple of Legal Aid lawyers on board, watching everyone like vultures."

Nelson: "Then how are we to sink the Frenchies and the Spanish?"

Hardy: "Actually, sir, we're not."

Nelson: "We're not?"

Hardy: "No, sir. The French and the Spanish are our European partners now... According to the Common Fisheries Policy, we shouldn't even be in this stretch of water. We could get hit with a claim for compensation."

Nelson: "But you must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil."

Hardy: "I wouldn't let the ship's diversity coordinator hear you saying that sir. You'll be up on disciplinary report — for hurt feelings or hate speech”.

Nelson: "All who speak ill of your king must be considered as an enemy."

Hardy: "Not any more, sir. As British, it is us who must be sensitive & inclusive in this multicultural age. Now put on your Kevlar vest; it's the rules. They could stop our ship engaging the enemy"

Nelson: "Don't tell me - Health and Safety. Whatever happened to rum, sodomy and the lash?"

Hardy: As I explained, sir, rum is off the menu! And there's a ban on corporal punishment."

Nelson: "What about sodomy?"

Hardy: "I believe that is now legal, sir."

Nelson: “In that case … kiss me, Hardy.”

MEETING OF 7TH OCTOBER
President Jeff opened the meeting by welcoming guests DG John Leddy, his wife Barbara, ADG Ian, Partners and Noella Mills who had submitted the winning design in the shopping bag competition.
Reports received:
- Melbourne Cup luncheon bookings close on 20 October.
- SC Rotoract Club Charter Night at USC on 16 October.
- The Maple St kiosk has been booked for calendar sales on 17 October.

Rotary talk - Angela gave a brief history of RAWCS which was set up in 1964 initially to combat health and poverty problems in PNG and Indonesia.  There have been 470 projects throughout Australia.  In 2013 RAWCS projects totalled $3 million; our Club's donations to Ebenezer and Shed The Light Nepal are made through RAWCS.

Rick V introduced Noella Mills, a member of Art4Place, who showed her winning design for the shopping bag. This incorporated an outline of a platypus on a black background  with Maleny and the Rotary logo. She thanked the Club for arranging this competition and was awarded her prizes.

DG John from RC of Hamilton had just returned from a 4 week trip with his wife to PNG.  He spoke of his visits to local Clubs and particularly about the ongoing success of RAM. He reported good news for the District with the revival of Rotoract, an upgrade for RYLA with a focus on professional development and encouraging signs of growth. He hoped for two new Clubs.  John emphasised the need to embrace change as this is good for Clubs; he noted that Cooroy and Eumundi Clubs were conducting their business meetings in the CWA Hall without a formal meal.

The DIK warehouse is full to overflowing with no funds available for shipping.  Following his time in PNG, he received a promise from a local governor for funding that is being finalised.  He is happy to accept submissions for the monthly newsletter.

Barbara, who is a member of Brisbane Highrise, spoke of the work of Humming Bird House which runs two palliative care cottages in Australia for terminally ill children.  A third cottage is planned for Chermside with a promise of government grants.  She is organising a project to construct a peaceful private courtyard within this facility beside the "end of life suite" for the exclusive use of parents and family.  There are 3,700 terminally ill children in Queensland.  This charity has been chosen by the Club as a beneficiary from the Melbourne Cup lunch.

A PASSING THOUGHT ABOUT MORTALITY

An old priest lay dying. He sent a message for an Australian Tax Office collector and his Lawyer to come to the hospital.

When they arrived, they were ushered up to his room and as they entered the priest held out his hands and motioned for them to sit on each side of the bed.

The priest grasped their hands, sighed contentedly, smiled and stared at the ceiling. For a time, no one said anything.

Both the tax collector and the lawyer were touched and flattered that the old man would ask them to be with him during his final moments.

They were also puzzled because the priest had never given any indication that he particularly liked either one of them.

Finally, the Lawyer asked,  "Father, we are honoured to be here but why did you ask the two of us to come? "

The old priest mustered all his strength, and then said weakly, "Jesus died between two thieves, and that's how I'd like to go."

MEETING OF 16TH SEPTEMBER
President Jeff opened the meeting by welcoming our guests Jane Millar and her mother.  He then inducted former Club member David Fraser who said that he was glad to return.

He mentioned that he had a number of photographs from the period of his previous from 2000 to 2008 and offered to show these at a future meeting.

Reports received:
- Push for ticket sales needed  for the Melbourne Cup lunch at Tiffany's.
- Car parking duties at Witta Fest on 19th September.
- Historical Society Pioneer Day on 20th September.
- Meeting of 23rd September in the Masonic Hall will be trialled at 6pm with cheese and biscuits.
- Treasurer Jim reported that the gross revenue from the Real Food Festival parking was $3,609.  This was more than a third lower than the two previousyears.
- The Board had approved a donation of US$100 per member to RF and A$2,000 to Polio Plus.
- Angela reported that the Board had agreed that the following 5 minute talks will be trialled monthly at Club dinner meetings – 1st meeting Foundation, 2nd meeting Rotary. Speakers will be rostered as Fellowship.
- Calendars are now on sale. Volunteers needed to man the Maple Street kiosk on 19th September.
- Mike G spoke about Rotary information and urged members to take up rotary.org registration and take advantage of the opportunities that this offered.

President Jeff then introduced Jane Millar, a year 11 student at Maleny High.  Jane has been selected to attend the NYSF at Canberra in January.  She explained the interview process and outlined her interest in physics and robotics. Her mother thanked the Club for sponsoring Jane and mentioned what adifference being successfully selected had made to her daughter.

The Sergeant's duties were shared by Chris and Bill with the usual result for members.

The guest speaker was Club member Dr CL Claridge who, with the assistance of her husband, gave a talk about Shed The Light Nepal which was accompanied by a rolling slide show. Shed the Light Incorporated is a registered charity established in February 2001 at Kenilworth. The organisation was founded by Suzanne Kupiak after travelling to Nepal in 2000. When she witnessed the poverty there, she came home determinated to help.  With local assistance she was able to open an op shop selling clothes from a charity collection system.

After six months of running the shop, Suzanne returned to Nepal and set up the first orphans' home in Kathmandu. Within 18 months 17 children had been settled there. The children were cared for by local house parents, given good quality food, and started their education.  There was a Nepali committee overseeing the children's home and connecting Suzanne to Nepalese culture.  These children have finished their education and are now qualified.  A new batch will start education this year.

Cl outlined other projects undertaken by the organisation. These included:
- training women in sewing and garment making so that they can become self sufficient; the garments are available for sale at the Nepali shop in Maple Street.
- providing a regular meal for street kids in Katmandhu.
- running a three months course for women in setting up a small business.
- designing and delivering emergency buildings post the earthquake.  This section was illustrated with slides which showed the extent of the devastation and the extreme difficulty of getting building materials to some isolated villages.

All of the above activities are funded from the Maleny and Kenilworth shops with support from donations from the general public.  Shed The Light will be one of the beneficiaries of the Melbourne Cup lunch.

There were many questions and CL was thanked to general acclaim.
