PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Firstly, at this month's Board Meeting, it was decided to say Yes to the Regionalisation Pilot Project. If you remember Michael Gregory spoke about this to us at a recent dinner meeting and Bernice and I have been sending out emails about this and the opportunity to watch webinars etc to find out more information. We didn’t get any objections so it was an easy vote for yes.
This is not going to affect our club or any club as it is only a pilot. There are still a lot of decisions about how and what to do - so, for us, it’s business as usual.

At this week's meeting, we have an interesting guest speaker John Christensen to talk about the Australian Constitution. John is touring the country giving talks about the fascinating history of our Constitution.  While slowly exploring our great land, John, supported by his wife Marg, is sharing his extensive knowledge about the Constitution with the hope that Australia will embrace his idea that the Constitution should be 'relocated' from the English Statute Books to their Australian equivalent.

With the donning of various hats, prompts and an occasional song, John apparently becomes very animated as he leads his audience through the historical drivers and political processes that culminated in the proclamation of the Constitution Act on 1 January 1901.

There may be interested people outside of our Club who may like to come along. Please extend an invitation to anyone who would like to attend and make sure you advise Bernice of any guests you manage to bring along.

Also, I’d like to let you know that a visit has been arranged to the Moreton Bay campus (in Petrie) of the University of Sunshine Coast. This campus has far exceeded the University’s expectations of growth and they are already constructing Stage 2 and designing Stage 3. The visit is planned for Thursday 29th September and there have been a couple of emails about this already. We have to give final numbers to the USC by next Tuesday 20th. We have five signed up so far; we plan to take the train from Landsborough directly to Petrie station as that is beside the university campus. Morning tea, I believe, will be provided.  If you want to join our small group, please let Sherryl Gregory know asap.

Finally I give notice that next year will be the Centenary of Rotary in Queensland.  Please make an early entry in your diary that this will be celebrated at our District Conference from 24-26 March 2023 at Brisbane City Hall.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 7TH SEPTEMBER
President Paulette opened this meeting by welcoming Members and our Guest Speaker Ian Davies.  She reported that Alan Wilson had been moved to a Brisbane hospital following his recent problems. All members wished him well.
The progress on various projects was discussed:
Maleny Rotary Golf Day - Roly gave an update on this event to be held on 28 October.  Sponsors are being found and advertising continues. The pace will pick up as the actual date approaches.
RC of Maleny Calendar - Lionel T informed us that the Kiosk had been booked for sales on 10 September and collected some volunteers.
Woolworths Sausage Sizzle - Jim A advised that we are no longer able to use the Woolworth BBQ and gas bottle. A new gas bottle, a light portable 2 burner BBQ and a foldable table, which can be stored at Chris B’s shed, have been purchased. The new price will be $3 per sausage in a blanket.
Pride of Workmanship - President Paulette reflected on the success of the evening and congratulated Jared on his work as MC and for arranging the background video footage.

Roly N then stood in for the Sergeant and showed surprisingly little mercy to his captive audience.

Our Guest Speaker was Ian Davies.  He was born and raised in Wales where he trained as a carpenter.  He migrated to Canada to work in the building trade. Whilst in Western Canada he became aware of the natural production in the depths of a local lake of a form of algae. He found that this had beneficial medicinal effects and went on to become the founder of Stem Cell Solutions which produces and markets a range of health products.

Keith gave the vote of thanks.

The meeting closed at 8:35pm.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
AN AMERICAN TALE WHICH CANNOT BE TRANSLOCATED TO OZ

A sixteen year-old boy came home with a brand new Ford F150. His parents look at the truck and ask, “Where did you get that truck?!”
“I bought it today,” he says
“With what money?” says his mother. They knew what a new F150 cost.
“Well,” he says, “this one cost me just fifteen dollars.”
The father looks at him like he’s crazy.
“Who would sell a truck like that for fifteen dollars?” he says.
“It was the lady up the street,” says the boy. “I don’t know her name – they just moved in. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy her F150 for fifteen dollars.
“Oh my goodness!” says the mother. “Maybe she’s mentally ill or has Alzheimer’s or something. John, you better go see what’s going on.”
So the boy’s father walks up the street to the house where the lady lives and finds her out in the yard calmly planting petunias.
He introduces himself as the father of the boy to whom she had sold a new Ford F150 truck for fifteen dollars and asks to know why she did it.
“Well,” she says, “two days ago my husband left on a business trip. Yesterday I got a phone call from his boss and found out that he had really run off to Hawaii with his secretary and doesn’t intend to come back.”
“Oh, my goodness, I’m so sorry,” the father says. “But what does that have to do with my son and your truck?”
“Well, this morning he called and told me he was stranded because he got robbed of his wallet with all his credit cards and cash. He told me to sell his new F150 and send him the money.

 So I did."

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
(a) Health Updates
Its great to hear some very encouraging news with regard to Chris RS. Judy reports that “Chris has rallied and seems to be out of the woods.” Thank you to all of our members for your continuing support for Chris and Judi.
And the good news continues with Brian A who has returned home to make his recovery, albeit that it will take a bit of time. It will be 5/6 weeks before Brian can put any weight on his ankle. A huge thank you again to our members for your contact with Brian and Gillian and your offers of support.
And further good news. I was speaking with Marlene B this morning who confirms that Bill H is also back home after a successful knee operation and is hopping around on one crutch looking for Easter eggs.
On behalf of the Club, I also pass on my heart felt best wishes for Cilla and Rick V and their family as Cilla prepares to undergo a major procedure over the coming weeks.
(b) Our next meeting is at the Maleny Hotel on 7 April under Qld COVID-19 Regulations. A big thank you to our astute Mike G for organising Madison Crane to be our guest speaker at our next meeting. On behalf of the Club, we are all looking forward to listening closely to Madison’s recent experiences throughout Europe as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program and the impact that the program has made on her future aspirations. Madison is the daughter of our newest member Des and wife Kelley.
(c) Recent Club events and Community Service
• Thank you to Des C, Chris B and other members for attending the Farewell Luncheon for Past President and former member of our Club Eddie Vann and Linda Vann from their outstanding and long-term leadership positions with our local TS Centaur Naval Cadet Unit on 27 March at the Maleny RSL. Eddie and Linda have been the glue that kept the Unit going, provided so many of our youth with opportunities that would never have otherwise been available to them and have been instrumental in the maturing of so many of our young teenagers into exceptional adults during their time with the Unit. It was also Eddie who had the vision for and was the inaugural Chairman of the annual Hinterland Aussie Day Expo on Australia Day at the Maleny Showgrounds and I also want to thank Eddie and Linda for all their time and support in organising and holding that event. I wish Eddie and Linda all the best on their retirement to Bribie Island.

• Another massive thank you to DG Neil Black and all his conference team for putting on an excellent last Rotary District 9600 Conference at Kingaroy on 26-28 March. It was my absolute pleasure to attend what was my first and last Rotary District 9600 Conference  with a tremendous band of local Rotarians. I have included a photo of our 7 strong contingent of Bernice and John McL, Paulette S, Craig S, Mike and Sherryl G and myself taken at the Gala Dinner at the Kingaroy Town Hall. We were blessed by the organisers with a fantastic array of speakers, mixed with serious networking with members and leaders of so many other clubs from within not only 9600 but also 9640, and so many opportunities for fun and laughter. Craig S found gold at Bethany thanks to a very generous John Bjelke – Peterson after nearly being flown away by the biggest Scotch Gray mosquitoes ever seen on the planet, and I have forever stamped into my memory the lifelike image of a Ford Cortina Hardtop stamping across the Kingaroy State High School Hall stage – all show but no go.
And a huge thank you to Bernice and John for organising outstanding accommodation for Crag S, Paulette S and myself from where we enjoyed the best view in Kingaroy.

We have come away with some great ideas on how to retain and grow our membership, and have been reminded of the important life-changing impact that Rotary can have on an individual life and career path and on the lives of so many here at home in Australia and around the globe. Sadly, I report that no member of our Club was successful with any of the great prizes on offer in the Conference Raffle.
The first 9620 District Conference is being held next year in Caloundra and I hope as many members of our Club as possible can attend for all or at least part of next year’s Conference.
• Local young Wootha adventurer Sam Hughes, the Travelling Jackeroo, departed Maleny on 21 March and has been camped at  Roma whilst his tractor underwent some minor repairs before taking on the real outback of Australia. Please keep looking at our Club facebook pages for further updates. Sam must be ready to set off as his tractor cracked about 45 kph on the Roma drag strip this afternoon on the way to raising more money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Dollys Dream.
• Another thank you to Rick V for his continued on-going work with the Maleny Show Society sorting out a plethora of COVID 19 compliance requirements, and especially with the complications arising from the 3 day lockdown of the past week.
(d) Upcoming Events
• 6 and 7 April Carparking at Australia Zoo as per Roster from Ian Hope RC of Glasshouse.

As Sherryl has reported, “It sounds very good, however it is at Camp Laurence, Lake Moogerah near Boonah, so not sure if we could get interest from teenagers up here considering how far away it is? More information at www.borderlinecamp.com.
• 17 July Winter Blues Concert – subject to successful grant application to SCC.
• 28 August Pride of Workmanship Dinner

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 17TH MARCH
President Greg opened the meeting with a welcome to all Rotarians, and a special welcome to guests AG Wendy Gilson and AGFR Vern Gilbert who will be talking later in the meeting.

He passed on his best wishes on behalf of the Club to two of our Rotarians who have been laid low, Brian Allen and Chris Ross-Smith, and wished then a speedy recovery.
Updates were provided on the following events which had occurred since our last meeting.
Obi Obi Clean-up: The event was well attended by the community and three of our members made it to clean up a great deal of crap from the area.
Elder Abuse Forum for hairdressers and barbers was a success with over ten people attending. There was much interest in the speakers and some expressed an interest in doing the course on the recognition of elder abuse if fund can be found.
Fran and Sheryl attended the Interact Conference at Caboolture
Laurelle and Jeff assisted at the astronomer’s night which was appreciated by the organisers.
The travelling Jackeroo will be in the Maleny main street on Sunday about 9.00am for the start of his adventure.

Sargeant at arms was absent so there was a free-for-all making fines on each other. It was quite revealing how quickly members were willing to “dob” in each other.

Gala Dinner: AG Wendy Gilson spoke to us about a Gala Dinner being organised by the Sunshine South Cluster Group to celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand. It will be held on Saturday 17th April, 2021 at the Maroochydore RSL at 6.30pm. Tickets $100 per head.  She hoped the Maleny Rotary could put a party together.
She also spoke about a Monument being planned to commemorate the centenary, location to be determined. All clubs in the Sunshine Coast Cluster would be depicted along with a time capsule in the base.
Annual Rotary Golf Tournament: Vern Gilbert invited members to join in the 43rd Annual Golf Tournament being organised by the Maroochydore Rotary Club. It will be held on 16-21 May 2012, at the Maroochy River Golf Club and attracts Rotarians Australia wide.

President Greg closed the meeting with an invitation to our next meeting which will be a vocational night at the Maleny Chocolate Factory on 31st March 2021.

RANDOM THOUGHTS - HOPEFULLY YOUR SMILES FOR THE DAY

When one door closes and another door opens, you are probably in prison...

To me, "drink responsibly" means don't spill it...

Age 60 might be the new 40, but 9:00 pm is the new midnight...

The older I get, the earlier it gets late...

I remember being able to get up without making sound effects.

I had my patience tested. I'm negative...

When you ask me what I am doing today, and I say "nothing," it does not mean I am free. It means I am doing nothing...

I finally got eight hours of sleep. It took me three days, but whatever... I run like the winded...

I hate when a couple argues in public, and I missed the beginning and don't know whose side I'm on...

When someone asks what I did over the weekend, I squint and ask, "Why, what did you hear?"

When you do squats, are your knees supposed to sound like a goat chewing on an aluminum can stuffed with celery???

Don't bother walking a mile in my shoes. That would be boring. Spend 30 seconds in my head. That'll freak you right out... (This Is The Truth!!!)

Sometimes, someone unexpected comes into your life out of nowhere, makes your heart race, and changes you forever. We call those people cops...

My luck is like a bald guy who just won a comb...

a) Brian Allen - Its fantastic news to hear that Brian is on the mend after his recent quad bike accident. As Bernice and Gillian have shared, many thanks to our Emergency Services, and hospital staff at SCUH. (f) And many thanks to Rick V for giving a well received presentation on behalf of our Club at the MDSRC AGM offering the benefit of our wisdom and experiences for compliance with COVID 19 requirements and condition, so that numerous other Maleny Clubs and organisations may hold planned events during 2021 and beyond. Another fantastic opportunity for our Club to make even more local connections during this year. Be prepared to give Rick a hand if you get a call or tap on the shoulder.

"Its not my year, its our year”.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 17TH MARCH
What a privilege to have been present at the Rotary Meeting last week on the 17 February – a rare opportunity to welcome the members of the Glasshouse MountaIns Rotary Club to make it a joint meeting; and the presence of Tony Long the incoming Assistant Governor responsible for the new Rotary District 9620 Cluster, which must be one of the largest in our region, representing not only the Glasshouse and Maleny clubs but the clubs in Caloundra and Sunshine Coast and every club in Papua New Guinea. Tony spoke about the upcoming PETS Zoom program in April; the upcoming 13 day RYDA program starting on 6 May when 2300 students were anticipated to attend a program which would include road rider and driver training safety. Members were urged to contact Fran Tickle if there were any Maleny students intending to attend the Interact Conference.

Additionally, a special welcome and congratulations were conveyed to a lovely couple from Glasshouse Rotary who had decided just that day to marry. A beautiful engagement ring that Peter purchased at the Maleny jewellers confirmed the happy announcement.

Other important issues reported included:
1. The huge success of the solar buddies program at the RSL where young students prepared kits each of which had to be accompanied with a handwritten message from the student who put together the kit.
2. Rick Vickers reported the intention of the Club to offer guidance and assistance to The Showgrounds management and other clubs to help them follow the rules required to avoid the spread of the virus at events, especially eating areas. The Club had a significant amount of knowledge having organised events which had been planned and delivered in accordance with Covid19 rules and requirements for tracking any outbreaks of the virus and how to assure very high standards of hygiene in eating areas.
3. Chris Brooker reported that Anzac Day would proceed as normal.
4. Craig and Paulette were working hard to finalise the Club's new website and it was noted that Paulette’s damage to her leg was clearly healing well as she had been able to abandon the crutch.
5. Lionel and Jeff (the 2 gardening gurus) were thanked by the President for completing gardening requirements on the Precinct.
6. For some reason the age of the Presidents laptop was raised with a reminder that the new replacement was still at Concept IT.

The usual fines session inflicted on members included a reverse fine by Roly who fined Chris Brooker for some peccadillo.

Our special keynote speaker was Sam Hughes (who only completed High School 3 months ago) and left us in awe of his imminent planned departure (on 15 March) to journey around Australia on a tractor towing a 7 m trailer loaded with of all things – a redundant flying Doctor plane- demonstrating his plan to follow the REDEX route north to Longreach, Darwin, and across the Nullarbor raising funds for flying doctor centres. He anticipated being en route for up to 12 months. His current sponsors included Rotary (Maleny President donated a cheque), Akubra hats, and his fuel requirements from the local Liberty Station.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
(a) We are up and running
Thanks to all our members who attended our first meeting back at the Maleny Hotel, and especially to our newest member, Peter McQuoid for his very humorous recount of some of his work experiences. A further thankyou to those members who attended the Apex Breakfast and the Citizenship ceremony held on Australia Day at the Maleny Showground to witness and welcome 18 new Australian citizens.
(b) Our next meeting at The Maleny Hotel on Wed 3 February 2021
It looks all clear for us to meet as usual at the Maleny Hotel to share in some further fellowship, tall stories and  interesting guest speakers.
(c) Community Project(s) for 100 years celebrations in 2021.
Can I remind members that Rick Vickers has called for members to join a new subcommittee to further research, cost and/or partner with others to undertake one or more beneficial projects and events.
(d) Also confirming that we will be having a joint Assembly meeting with RC of Glasshouse Mountains with a suggested date of 17 February at the Maleny Hotel.
Tony Long from Glasshouse Club is the incoming AG for our new Rotary Cluster.
(e )Domestic and Family Violence collaboration with Zonta
Hairdressers with Heart Project: The committee met with representatives of this Bribie Island organisation last week and we plan to hold an information event in March 2021 for Range hairdressers to introduce the project.
(f) 100 Celebration breakfast
At our Presidents Cluster meeting yesterday, it was clear local members were not prepared to travel to the events being organised in Brisbane and preferred a local low cost inclusive event to celebrate 100 years of Rotary.
Presidents from all of our Cluster clubs have made a decision to hold a centenary celebration of Rotary at the Beersheba Living Museum on Saturday 24 April. It will be a BYO breakfast from 8.30am with a charge of $10 per head to provide the seed funding for our Cluster clubs centenary project.
All of our current clubs will continue to be involved in and support the proposed project with the aim of involving all Sunshine Coast Rotary Clubs in the future . Details of the project will follow in due course.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 20TH JANUARY
President Greg opened the meeting by welcoming 21 members and two guests, Des Crane and David Kaye. Because of a kitchen delay, he invited Peter McQuoid to give an impromptu preview of his early life. In a very amusing way, Peter said that he had been brought up on a farm in WA and qualified as an accountant.  This somehow led to him to flying in boxes of fresh burramundi from Indonesia to Sydney where he became a fishmonger. That was followed by work on an offshore gas platform before accepting an accountancy role in PNG.  Unfortunately no on knew who he was when he arrived at Cooper's PNG office. This saga was cut short when the meal arrived and we look forward to the second installment.
The Duty Officer for the evening has reported that there was a scintillating Sergeant's Session which was followed by business matters.
- Solar Buddies
A working bee has been arranged on 11 February at the RSL at 11.30am with children from the River School to assemble 40 for despatch to Asia.
- Red Benches
Andrew Wallace spoke at the installation of the second bench at MNC.  The Sunshine Coast Council is to install four new benches including one in Maleny.
- New Website
Paulette is using the $3,000 grant from the Council to get Clive Waring to upgrade the website and design a new brochure
- Calendars
Rick V reported that sales have been going well.
- Zambia School

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT

PERHAPS NOT A LAUGHING MATTER

A group of seniors were sitting around talking about  all their ailments at the Coffee Club.

"My arms have got so weak I can hardly lift  this cup of  coffee," said  one.

"Yes, I know," said another. "My cataracts are so bad;    I can't even see my coffee."

"I couldn't even mark an "X" at election time because  my hands are so crippled," volunteered a  third.

"What?  Speak up! What? I can't hear you,” said one elderly lady.

“I can't turn my head because of the arthritis in my neck,"

Said one, to which several  nodded weakly in  agreement.

"My blood pressure pills make me so dizzy!" exclaimed  another.

"I forget where I am, and where I'm going," said another.

"I guess that's the price we pay for getting old,"

Winced an old man as he slowly shook his  head.

The others nodded in  agreement.

"Well, count your blessings," said a woman cheerfully....

"Thank God we can all still  drive."
