Beth had been an integral part of our Club since 1980 when she and John moved to Maleny. She was ever present at Club functions for 40 years and will be sorely missed.

On behalf of all members, our sincerest condolences to John and his family at this sad time.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
1. It has been a sad start to spring for long term member John Whan with the passing of his beloved wife Beth. Our sincere condolences are with John and his family.

2. Qld COVID-19 Regulations
I want to congratulate members for their social distancing and safe hygiene practices over the past few months and ask that we all remain vigilant in our compliance with these regulations as we move into the last quarter of the calendar year.

3. Domestic and Family Violence collaboration with Zonta, Quota, and Lions Clubs
(a) Auspicing Agreement and MOU
I am finalising an MOU between the collaborating partners and an Auspice agreement for the funds paid to our club for this on-going project.
(b) Refurbishment of the Red Rose Foundation Bench Seat outside the Maleny Post Office
Post office red paint has been purchased by the club for the refurbishment of the seat and as soon as we have the okay from the Body Corporate of the Riverside Centre , Malcolm B and Ric T (as members of Maleny Mens Shed) will remove the seat, refurbish it and replace it into the same spot.
(c) Domestic and Family Violence Forum
It was a privilege to be involved in the Forum on the 26 Aug at the Maleny RSL which presented a wealth of valuable information to our community through 4 excellent informative and highly experienced speakers. A member of the audience Sr Sgt Detective Daren Edwards from the Maroochydore CIB mentioned during a question from the audience that one of the most difficult problems facing our Society is the need to change our culture and attitudes to domestic and family violence which starts in the family through parents who are teaching /modelling behaviour and attitudes to their children.
(d) Speak Up Now Stop Domestic and Family Violence new logo and letterhead
The collaborating Partners have also designed a new logo and letterhead
(e) D&FV signage
The distribution and fixing of the new blue signage for male toilets throughout Maleny and Witta will be organised by Sherryl G at our next meeting.

4. Pride of Workmanship Awards
Our Vocation Services Director Paulette S and her team together with fantastic contributions on the night from Ric T, Sherry G, and Alan W have held a magnificent Pride of Workmanship Dinner at Tranquil Park on Saturday 29 August 2020. Paulette has also had a great article printed in the MDSRC newsletter with others planned for the GC&MN, SVG and HT. Arrangements are being made to present the remaining award to Melodi Fanti from the IGA during one of our October meetings. As Paulette S has suggested, we should definitely hold the event next year to coincide again with National Skills Week (24th – 30th August 2020 this year).

5. Maleny Settlers Green Project
The Club was also mentioned in the MDSRC Newsletter this week regarding the $35000 funding for the playground equipment. Selection of the equipment is now underway.

6. Nepal - Business Entrepreneurship Training & Support for Women with Disability
Covid 19 and government restrictions including two lockdown periods in Kathmandu Valley have delayed the commencement of this project. Pahichan and Shed the Light Nepal staff decided to implement one component of the project through a virtual workshop. This workshop will be held over three days 12-14 September. The facilitators are blind Nepali women, two of whom live overseas in Denmark and USA where they work as business counsellors to better the position of vision impaired women in those countries. The third resides and works in Nepal.
The aim of the workshop is to enhance the communication and interpersonal skills of women with disabilities and to open new and a wide spectrum of opportunities for business enterprises.
The facilitators will share ideas from abroad and work with the women to find ways to develop effective marketing strategies in the Nepali context. The third day will also be attended by business representatives, NGO/INGO members, stakeholders, government etc. This session will focus on advocacy and networking.
The Rotary Club of New City Road in Kathmandu is supporting the project by contributing supplies to the training program.

7. Kiva
To date, RCM has provided 125 loans totalling $3250 to people in 29 countries. Loans have been in 12 different sectors, mostly in health, retail, agriculture, education and housing.

8. Maleny Education Support Fund
Since July, the MESF has received and approved five applications for support. Government restrictions under the Covid-19 pandemic have, and are continuing to have financial impacts for families in our area. Business downturn, job loss and family fragmentation are appearing as difficulty for families with children of school age. It is anticipated the number of applications for support from MESF will increase in the next 12 months.
The Board has just approved another donation of $2500 into the project.

9. Induction of Craig Sim
I am looking forward to the induction of Craig at our next meeting on Wed 16 Sep 2000. I know that Craig will be an outstanding Rotarian, and enthusiastic member of our club, and hope members partners are also able to join with us in celebrating his membership to our club.

10. Upcoming Date Claimers
(a) Wed 30 Sep 2012 Vocation Visit Wine Tasting and Dinner. Paulette S has organised a vocational visit to Forest Heart Eco Nursery at 4.30pm. Spencer Shaw will take us through what’s happening in gardens in Spring. Paulette expects it to last about 60- 75 mins depending on questions. MINUTES OF MEETING OF 2ND SEPTEMBER

President Greg opened the meeting by welcoming 20 members plus guests Craig Sims, Val France of Quota, Guest Speaker PP Greg Isons and his wife Ann.

PP Sherryl spoke of the successful Domestic Violence forum for organisations on the Range.  Signs to be put around Maleny-SPEAK OUT NOW.

On behalf of Quota, Val presented a cheque for $1,000 as feed money for the "Speak Up Now" campaign which was received with applause.

P Greg then said:
- that the Club was liaising with the Mens' Shed to refurbish the seat outside the Post Office.
- that the Pride of Workmanship Dinner had been a great event for the Club.  He congratulated Paulette for organising the event and thanked the four speakers who addresses the theme "Do it once and do it well".
- that volunteers for the Maroochydore Iron Man event must register on line.
- that the Vocational Visit to the Eco Nursery on 30 September was scheduled for one hour at 4:30pm.  It would be followed by a wine tasting and pizza in Finbars.

Lionel T thanked those who assisted hanging the calendar photographs in Maple 3 and announced that the Kiosk had been booked for sales on 30 September.

The Sergeant made his anticipated assault on the truth - and members wallets.

Chris B introduced PP Greg Isons of Rotary Club of Eumundi to talk about their Project Dogura for Womens Health in PNG. Greg had been brought up in India prior to working for 13 years in PNG. He then served 25 years in the Australian Air Force.

The Eumundi Club started making small donations to PNG before deciding to look at Milne Bay Province for project support. It is one of the poorest areas in PNG   They developed a relationship with Dogura Mission which services the remote areas of Milne Bay. The mortality rate of women during childbirth is 80 times that of Australia and 40 of 1,000 new born babies die.  In Dogura the hospital conditions are spartan.

The Club is committed to an initial project of $7,000 for which it has received a District Grant. It is seeking support from other D9600 clubs. The scope of the project includes some refurbishment of the maternity ward, internal toilet and shower facilities and a sewer connection. This is the first step in Project Dogura which has the following goal:

PP Greg would welcome the involvement of other clubs in the future.  Alan Wilson proposed the vote of thanks.

The meeting concluded at 2030h.

PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP AWARDS

Acknowledging and recognizing people taking pride in their work is something that’s rarely done. It’s not about winning prizes, it’s purely about taking the time to show appreciation for a job well done.

On Saturday 29th August, the Rotary Club of Maleny did this at a presentation dinner at Tranquil Park and gave several nominated people a ‘Pride of Workmanship’ award plaque in recognition of going above and beyond in their everyday work.

6 people were nominated and regrettably one nominee, Melody Fanti, bakery manager at Super IGA Maleny, was unable to attend due to an IGA work function on the same evening. Rotary club will do a separate presentation to Melody.

The other 5 nominees did attend, together with their respective nominators, the people that took the time to write some words about why they deserved to be recognized for this award.

It was smiles all around and even a couple of tears of joy when each nominee was presented with their award and the person who nominated them spoke about why they deserved to receive this recognition.

It was also wonderful to see such a cross section of people from various walks of life. There were:

Clive Powell – Volunteer groundsman, gardener, painter, joint curator and more at Pioneer Village

Debbie Rossow – Learning Support Facilitator at the Maleny Independent School

Gayle Pope – Library Officer at Maleny Library

Neal Charlton – Electrician & Sole Trader at Traditional Maintenance

Sherri Dan – Food & Beverage Services at Hotel Maleny

The nominees brought their partners and friends along to enjoy the night with them. It was interesting to see some lingering and chatting with each other long after the official part of the evening finished.

A big thanks to Alan Wilson, a past president in the Maleny Rotary Club, who pushed late last year to have this event held again after a gap of 8-9 years. Little did we know then what 2020 held for us and so it seems even more timely that this event was held. Next year, it’ll be on again, so start thinking about who you would like to see recognized to receive a ‘Pride of Workmanship’ award.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT

If you're not familiar with the work of Steven Wright, he's the famous erudite (comic) scientist who once said:  "I woke up one morning, and all of my stuff had been stolen and replaced by exact duplicates." His mind sees things differently than most of us do. . . here are some of his gems:

- I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

 - Borrow money from pessimists - they don't expect it back.

- Half the people you know are below average.

 - A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.

 - A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

- The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

 - How do you tell when you're out of invisible ink?

 - When everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

 - Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.

 - I intend to live forever... So far, so good.

 - What happens if you get scared half to death twice?

 - If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.

- To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.

- The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.

- Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don't have film.

- If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
Last Saturday night Michael and I attended the 60th Anniversary celebration of the Rotary Club of Nambour. Chartered in 1949 by the RC of Gympie, the Club has a rich history of major projects, and a Rotary International President, Sir Clem Renouf to their name. It was a very enjoyable and sparkly night, with a suitably decorated cake to mark the occasion.

Planning is underway for our 60th celebration on Wednesday 23 October at the RSL, so mark that date in your diaries.

After the last dinner meeting when we discussed the Computers4Learning call-out for computer mice. Ric and Chris got into action and by the end of the week 10 new Logitech corded computer mice were on their way to C4L. I had a very appreciative email from their manager on Tuesday to say that they had arrived and would be put to good use. Ric has got busy spreading the word around and has received a laptop for the program. More are needed. Thanks to Ric and Chris for their quick work on this.

With a grandchild staying over this week, I’ve been out and about showing her the wonders of Maleny. We visited the historical village where men from the Men’s Shed were busily working on one of the houses. It was so good to see the RC Maleny sign on the Men’s Shed as well as on the Village street sign.

Then on to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve where the new Rotary seat at the front got the tick of approval. I know we are getting a sign organised for the seats, but we must also persevere with getting a much bigger recognition of Rotary’s involvement in the park over the past 60 years.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 18TH SEPTEMBER
President Sheryl opened the meeting by welcoming the members present, sparing a thought for those adventurers in the Kimberley.

She announced that the Board had accepted the resignation of CL C because she was spending much of her time in New Zealand.  Michael G would stand in as International Director and Angela G would monitor the Tanzanian project.

The Board was also investigating some acknowledgement for Florence Wood for her occasional generous cash donations.

After the meal and a ritual savaging from the Sergeant, the Business Session began.

1. Upcoming dates
9Oct Zonta High Tea for Hamlin Fistula Hospital.
13Oct RC Glasshouse 20th Anniversary.
21Nov High for Ebenezer at the Orangery.

2. Correspondence
ShelterBox report received.  There is a team in the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian.
A request received from Computers for Kids specifically for mice.
A thank you letter received for the donation to the Chaplaincy Dinner.

3. Sausage Sizzle
The question was raised of whether it was worthwhile to continue with this exercise in view of the low income raised in relation to hours worked. No vote was taken but the view was expressed that this should continue as a PR exercise.

4. Calendar Sales
Lionel T reported that these were underway but he would be grateful if members could recommend additional sales outlets.

Jeff C reported that he had managed to book the kiosk for these sales and the dates will be circulated.

5. 60th Anniversary Dinner
Chris B has arranged a committee for this.  David Wilson will be the Guest Speaker and our Club Historian Jack Wilcox will be a special guest.

The meeting closed at 8:30pm.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
SOME LINGUISTIC DEXTERITY

APROSDOKIANS  are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence is unexpected; Winston Churchill loved them:

1. Where there's a will, I want to be in it.

2. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

3.  If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

4.  War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

5.  Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit.  Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

6. They begin the evening news with 'Good Evening,' then proceed to tell you why it isn't.

7.  To steal ideas from someone is plagiarism.  To steal from many is called research.

8.  In filling in an application, where it says, 'In case of emergency', notify:  I put 'DOCTOR.'

9.  I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

10.  Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they look sexy.

11.  Behind every successful man is his woman.  Behind the fall of a successful man is usually another woman.

12.  A clear conscience is the sign of a bad memory.

13.  I used to be indecisive.  Now I'm not so sure.

14.  Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.  Nor is there any future in it.

15.  Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

16.  Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in your garage makes you a car.

17.  Finally: I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it’s getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

MEETING OF 19TH SEPTEMBER
The meeting opened with Vice President Michael welcoming members, partners, former member John Chiarotto and special guest DG Wendy Protheroe.

John C recounted that he left for Tasmania some 10 years ago and updated members on his life in the Apple Isle.  Unfortunately he is now a widower and is considering reapplying for a mainland residence permit.

CL reported that the Board had agreed to the establishment of a Maleny Education Support Fund.

Greg W said that he was hoping to finalise a date with a VIP to open the new shade cover for spectators at the High School netball court.

Chris R-S spoke of the Club's involvement with the Maleny Singers production of the Marriage of Figaro in November.  It will be a case of all hands on deck as the profits from the performances will be distributed to our nominated charities - BRCG and Care Flight.

Rick V announced that the Annual Charity Cricket Match was scheduled for 20 October. The Club will sponsor each team's first duck.

Michael G reported that the Board had approved a donation of $3,000 to the Mens' Shed to build a partition between the wood and metal working areas.

After the Sergeant had had his wicked way, Michael introduced the DG.

Wendy's talk was wide ranging:
- covering DIK and her experience unloading "bicycle" wheel chairs in Bougainville
- clean water projects in PNG
- the efforts to revaccinate children in PNG following the confirmation of new polio cases
- her wish for more attendance at the District Conference
- the upcoming change with District amalgamations

Peter McGuirk gave the vote of thanks.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
A SOBERING TALE

Why Parents Drink

The boss wondered why one of his most valued employees was absent but had not phoned in sick.
So he dialled the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper. '

"Hello ?"

'Is your daddy home?' '

Small voice whispered,

' Yes, he's out in the garden ,
'

’May I talk with him?'
The child whispered,

' No .' ;

So the boss asked, 'Well, is your Mommy there?'

Yes she's out in the garden too’

‘The boss asked; 'May I talk with her?'
Again the

No’ .

'Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, 'Is anybody else there?'

' Yes ,'
whispered the child, '
 a policeman.

'
Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, 'May I speak with the policeman?'

' No, He's busy , '
whispered the child.

'Busy doing what?'

' Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the police dog men. '

Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise in the background, the boss asked, 'What is that noise?'

' It's a helicopter '
answered the whispering voice.

'What is going on there?' demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive.

' The search team just landed a helicopter '

'A search team?' said the boss. 'What are they searching for?'

Still whispering, the young voice replied with

a muffled giggle....         ' ME '

MEETING OF 6TH APRIL
Meeting of a select number opened by President Jeff and a couple of reports by Directors present.

National Youth Science Forum student Jane Miller gave a scintillating performance on her time at Canberra in January. She had prepared a power point presentation on the program and spoke to it eloquently, passionately and knowledgeably.

Jane certainly raised the bar on reports by any student who has attended a Rotary youth program. She had been invited to a further science symposium at University of Queensland that so impressed her she changed her major from Artificial Intelligence to Quantum Physics.

Jane is presently in Japan for a 9 month exchange and will complete her Yr. 12 next year. Definitely not the same girl we first interviewed approx. 12 months ago.

Following a very brief flurry of fines by Sergeant Chris, all true of course, we were given a presentation on Membership and New Members by AG Bruce McNaught.

Bruce spoke with vigour on themes of strategy, selling Rotary, Membership nights and the “elevator statement” whereby he challenged us to prepare a short presentation on Rotary to inform an unenlightened fellow traveller in an elevator (Americanised version of “lift”) during the time it takes to travel during stops.

And then we all went home . . . . . .

PRESENTATION TO THE MALENY MEN'S SHED
The Maleny Rotary Club presented a cheque of $10,500.00 to the Men’s Shed at the Maleny Historical Village for their  new slab. NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE IN A COUNTRY WITHOUT MEDICARE

An old geezer became very bored in retirement and decided to open a medical clinic.  He put a sign up outside that said: "Dr. Geezer's Clinic.  Get your treatment for $500 - if not cured, get back $1,000."

Doctor "Young," who was positive that this old geezer didn't know beans about medicine, thought this would be a great opportunity to get $1,000.  So he went to Dr.Geezer's clinic.

Dr. Young: "Dr.Geezer, I have lost all taste in my mouth.  Can you please help me?"

Dr. Geezer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in Dr. Young's mouth."

Dr. Young: Aaagh!! -- "This is Gasoline!"

Dr. Geezer: "Congratulations! You've got your taste back.  That will be $500."

Dr. Young gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days figuring to recover his money.

Dr. Young:  "I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything."

Dr. Geezer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth."

Dr. Young:  "Oh, no you don't,  -- that is Gasoline!"

Dr. Geezer: "Congratulations!  You've got your memory back. That will be $500."

Dr. Young (after having lost $1000) leaves angrily and comes back after several more days.

Dr.Young: "My eyesight has become weak --- I can hardly see anything!!!!"

Dr. Geezer: "Well, I don't have any medicine for that so, "Here's your $1000 back." (giving him a $10 bill)

Dr. Young: "But this is only $10!"

Dr. Geezer:  "Congratulations! You got your vision back! That will be $500.

Moral of story - Just because you're "Young" doesn't mean that you can outsmart an "old Geezer".

Remember: Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to tick us off!
